Levels of class proficiency can vary from week to week, as our workshops are not structured to any particular format.     Extractions: I have put this guide together as a service to traditional musicians, radio announcers and anyone else who is interested in traditional Irish music, and would like to be able to pronounce tune titles, people's names and the like in Irish, but is not familiar with the language or the spelling system. This guide is not intended for linguists or people who are learning Irish as a language. It is simply a rule of thumb for people who are unfamiliar with Irish (e.g., most English-speaking people outside Ireland). As an example of what I mean, most English-speaking people in California or the U.S. Southwest, seeing the placename "San Joaquin", would pronounce it "San Wah-KEEN". This is not exactly the correct pronunciation in Spanish. You would, however, be understood a lot better by a Mexican than if you said "San JOE-a-Kwin", which is what applying English spelling rules to Spanish would give you. In our part of the world most people have a rough concept of the Spanish spelling system. If you are involved with Irish music, why not try to acquire a similar knowledge of Irish spelling? Never again need you feel uneasy when confronting words like bhfuil or Maedhbh Spoken Irish has three main dialects, Munster (Cork and Kerry), Connemara and Ulster (Donegal). This guide is more or less based on the Ulster dialect.

    Extractions: Welcome to Gaelic Song Archive ) first went up in early 1995, and has never been down for more than a few days since then. The archive originally contained Scots Gaelic and Manx Gaelic songs as well, but I decided fairly early on to concentrate on Irish, and the Scots Gaelic and Manx songs were removed in 1996. In addition to texts, many of the songs also have their basic tune notated in ABC format. The notation should only be considered a rough guide, as it is impossible to record the nuances of good Irish traditional singing in standard musical notation. For an explanation of how ABC works, click here . See our links page for more sites dealing with ABC, including software to convert it into standard musical notation. The traditional singing style for most of the songs in the archive is called , which litterally means 'singing in the old style.' I have prepared a short description suggested recordings to help you find out what it is really like. Suggestions/comments/contributions are welcome, but please don't send me requests for specific songs that are not in the archive, or any requests for other 'sheet music.'
