Extractions: St. Patrick's Day Please Take a Moment to Rank My Site :-) Although St. Patrick's Day is a holiday associated with the country of Ireland , St. Patrick's Day is welcomed by people from every background, not just the Irish. St. Patrick , the patron saint of Ireland, was not Irish, but thought to have been born in Britain. No one knows for sure, but it is believed that March 17 was the date of St. Patrick's death rather than his birth. There are many legends about Saint Patrick. The most popular one is that he drove all the snakes out of Ireland and into the sea. How did Saint Patrick come to be associated with Ireland? Legend has it that, as a young man of 16, St. Patrick was captured by pirates from his father's farm in Britain and kept as a slave for six years, working as a shepherd in Ulster, Ireland. After escaping back to Britain, St. Patrick devoted his life to God. He was a deeply religious man and dreamed of returning to Ireland to bring Christianity to the Irish. He did-as a monk-and is said to have established over 300 churches and baptized over 120,000 people. The historical records from that era are incomplete, but the surviving writings of St. Patrick show that he was a devout man and tireless missionary.
Extractions: BELFAST, Northern Ireland (CNN) British, Irish and American negotiators worked Wednesday to keep Northern Ireland's joint Protestant-Catholic administration from unraveling after monitors ruled the Irish Republican Army has not begun to disarm. The latest crisis comes after a key disarmament commission report found the IRA had taken no steps to surrender its weapons after two months of talks. The disarming of paramilitary groups is a key provision of the U.S.-brokered peace agreement that led to the creation of the self-rule government that has run Northern Ireland for eight weeks. Extractions: New Internet Bible study Disciple Lessons from 2 Peter and Jude Who was St. Patrick? You scratch your head. He drove the snakes out of Ireland? Wrong! He won a shamrock-plucking contest? Come on! He wore green before it was fashionable? Give me a break! Would the real St. Patrick please stand up? Patrick was born on the west coast of Britain about 360 A.D. At the age of 16 he was kidnapped by Irish pirates and sold as a slave into the service of a local king. On a rainy hillside tending sheep, he met the Lord and his faith was nurtured over the next several months. He escaped, but God called him to return to the emerald isle as a missionary. At that time druid priests, deep into black magic and the occult, held the island's inhabitants in a lockgrip. Patrick challenged this demonic stronghold and won, but the victory was neither quick nor cheap. He was imprisoned for months at a time, his only respite from the stress of constant travel and hardship. Yet one after another, tiny kingdoms would finally allow Patrick to declare the good news of Jesus within their borders. He baptized tens of thousands. Hundreds of chapels were erected for the worship of Jesus all over Ireland. Who was Patrick? A saint of God who gave his life to help people know Jesus by starting mission churches. St. Patrick might feel more comfortable at newly-planted church than even St. Peter's Basilica. After all, he was partial to the challenge and excitement of new churches.

Extractions: After bicycling through four countries, alone on the road for over three months I arrived in Ireland for some "real" vacation before heading home. From London (Euston Station), I took a train to Holyhead, the port in Wales, and at 3:45AM sailed on Irish Ferries across the cold, dark sea of Ireland towards the dawn and Dublin. After a confusing ride through the empty streets I found the train station and hopped immediately onto a train bound for Cork, where I spent two days in empty college housing near the Beamish brewery. This is a small road near Ballydavid on the northeast tip of Dingle Penninsula in Smerwick Harbor. I was bicycling to a pub there because I'd heard there'd be a session with good craic and without the ever present, suffocating crowds that fill the pubs of Dingle town. In Ballydavid I got to experience a real Irish pub without the usual mob of tourists. When I got there the place was near empty, but slowly the Ballydavid locals trickled in for some dinner and pints. The four musicians I'd met at O'Flaherty's Pub the night before were jamming away on pipe, whistle, guitar, bodhrain, and mandolin. The evening sun was making framed boxes of light on the floor. Little kids chased a puppy under the tables, around the bar and out the door. A toddler swayed around the floor like a drunken fisherman. Glasses were being lifted and clinked together. You could hear the tap breathing nitrogen and Guinness into pint glasses. The aroma of home cooking swirled about the room. I had brown bread with some lamb stew, with my Guinness, of course.

BELFAST, Northern Ireland A car bomb has been defused by army experts at Belfast airport on the day new peace proposals for Northern Ireland were unveiled. A police spokesman said the 20 kg (44lb) bomb was found in a silver Volvo estate car in a car park after a telephone warning, Reuters reported. A controlled explosion was carried out, with thousands of people told to stay in the airport terminal during the operation. The bomb warning came hours after the new blueprint aimed at rescuing the stalled peace process in Northern Ireland was unveiled. The 10-page document states that decommissioning of paramilitary arms is "indispensable" to the future of the peace process. In return it offers more commitments on military cutbacks and police reform as incentives to get the handover of weapons under way.
