The Association of Geography Teachers of Ireland was founded in 1961 to promote the interests of Geography and of Geography teaching whereever the need and opportunity arose. Branches exist in various parts of Ireland. Membership is open to all who are interested in the teaching of Geography. Privileges of full membership include the receipt of Geographical Viewpoint and participation in all activities of the Association. Associate membership is available at special rates for full time-students and retired persons. Subscriptions begin in September of each year. Details of membership rates and application forms are available from the Treasurer of the Association.

    Extractions: Geography and climate of Ireland The geography of Ireland has often been related to that of a saucer the edges representing the the granite mountains and cliffs which are found predominately in the coastal areas whilst the central area of Ireland is much less mountainous, It is in these flatter areas that the larger rivers widen out to form large loughs. Most of the countries running water is made up from alkaline rivers before joining the sea via winding marshy estuaries. Ireland has a temperate, humid climate due to the action of the prevailing southwesterly winds and the warming effects of the Gulf Stream having the effect of keeping the country "warm" in winter. The combined effect of these factors is that whilst sharing similar latitude with other countries the climate swings between winter and summer are not as severe. Snow when it does fall rarely lasts long and is usually "Here one day and gone the next", possible exceptions being the higher mountains where snow will melt much slower. Where Ireland does differ is in the general weather which would best be described as "Changeable" one such expression to confirm this is "You get all four seasons in the one Day here". The 566 Wards used for the 1991 Census were created following the Boundary Commission Review in 1984. They do not compare very well with the 582 wards used for the 2001 Census which were created following the 1992 Boundary Commission review as there is significant differences between the sets. For 1992, many of the 1984 individual ward boundaries were changed, others were deleted and subsumed into existing or new wards and some were renamed. The only major change in District Council boundaries between the two Censuses relates to Banbridge and Newry and Mourne District Council areas where as a result of the Local Government District Boundary change of 1992 the ward of Rathfriland, in effect, moved from Newry and Mourne Local Government District to Banbridge Local Government District. Area types The main types of existing areas which the Census recognises are: Ward, Local Government District, Health and Social Services Boards, Education and Library Boards, Parliamentary Constituency and NUTS level 3. All have boundaries which are currently consistent with one another although they are subject to change over time.

The uprising occurred on Easter Monday, April 24, 1916, and centred mainly in Dublin. The chief objectives were the attainment of political freedom and the establishment of an Irish republic. Centuries of discontent, marked by numerous rebellions, preceded the uprising. The new crisis began to develop in September 1914, following the outbreak of World War I, when the British government suspended the recently enacted Home Rule Bill, which guaranteed a measure of political autonomy to Ireland.
