JILT: The Regulation Of Pornography And Child Pornography On The Internet A discussion of two different legal issues within one context, the internet the regulation of harmful content such as pornography, and the regulation of illegal content such as child pornography. http://elj.warwick.ac.uk/jilt/internet/97_1akdz/default.htm
Extractions: lawya@leeds.ac.uk Pornography has been the most controversial topic arising from the use of the Internet in recent years. Its availability on the Internet has caused fear and a 'moral panic' among the government, law enforcement bodies such as the police, prosecutors and judges together with the media in general. There is no settled definition of pornography in a multi-national environment such as the Internet and cultural, moral and legal variations all around the world make it difficult to define 'pornographic content' in a global society. This article will discuss two different issues within one context, the Internet: the regulation of harmful content such as pornography and regulation of illegal content such as child pornography. These issues are different in nature and should not be confused. Any regulatory action intended to protect a certain group of people, such as children, should not take the form of an unconditional prohibition of using the Internet to distribute certain content that is freely available to adults in other media. The production and distribution of child pornography is illegal in the UK and in many other countries. This also applies to the Internet. This article will discuss these issues and will examine the current initiatives to regulate the availability of illegal and harmful content on the Internet. The article will propose a multi-layered' solution for the regulation of pornographic content on the Internet. This may involve the on-line users, Internet Service Providers, codes of practice, self-regulatory bodies, technical solutions, the Government, and the European Union in the near future.

Extractions: In April this year the libel case brought by Dr. Laurence Godfrey against Demon Internet Limited was settled, Demon paying a substantial sum to Dr. Godfrey. The case of Godfrey v Demon Internet Limited th March 1999. Lunney v Prodigy Services was similar to the Demon case. The Demon case has provoked comment, much of it expressing fear of repression of free speech on the net. For example: "The ruling, if not reversed on appeal, not only threatens to damage the internet industry, but also users, proponents of freedom of expression and electronic commerce ". ( See ZDNetUK According to David Furniss, director of Scottish Telecoms Internet Services "This decision will affect not only the way ISPs operate their services, but impact the entire concept of freedom of information that has been the driving force in the development of the internet." ( See ZDNetUK A spokesman for Demon has been quoted as saying: "If someone insulted you in a pub, would you sue the pub owner for housing the defamatory remark?"
SocioSite: EIGENAARDIGHEDEN VAN CYBERSPACE: CYBERSTALKING An analysis of the peculiarities of cyberstalking and strategies to prevent and fight digital stalking. By Dr. Albert Benschop (University of Amsterdam). http://www2.fmg.uva.nl/sociosite/websoc/cyberstalking_en.html
Extractions: Stalked in cyberspace The internet and other telecommunication technologies rapidly pervade every remote corner of our economy and culture, politics and leisure, and in our private lives. The internet is an attractive medium, which can, in principle, facilitate and accelerate all our interpersonal relations, and even add new qualities to them. But just like other revolutionary technologies the internet doesn't only offer an enormous potential for progression, but also for improper use and abuse. The medium that can help us to engage in or maintain personal or intimate relations can also be abused to harass people, to threaten and torture them with sexual harassment. The internet has created a new type of criminality: cyberstalking. Stalking = constant harassment The English verb 'to stalk' originally meant 'creep up on', 'pursue'. At present it is also used for constantly harassing someone with visits, phone calls, letters, e-mails, etc. By now the word stalking has also been included in

Extractions: The emergence of information technology in the past decade, its widespread use at a reasonable price throughout the world, and the relative success in "user friendly computers" that allow more people to use computers are significantly reflected in the field of psychology. The technological advances initially affected local and individual operations in classes, laboratories, and clinics (e.g., teaching aids, storage of information, editing of documents, local experimentation); this quickly changed to include group and community activities through the introduction of computer networks. The formation of the Internet-a global computer network that connects ever-growing numbers of local networks and computers-has indeed created a "global village," where people communicate and interact on-line with ease. The purpose of the present article is to critically review the literature on different psychological applications used on the Internet and to point out their strengths and weaknesses. At the present time, research is very limited in both the number and scope of studies. Consequently, this review is descriptive and practical-oriented in nature. It is hoped that additional reviews will soon complement this one to present a more scientific evaluation of these state-of-the-art psychological endeavors.
