Lynne Anderson-Inman, University of Oregon The U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) has a long history-spanning nearly three decades-of supporting research and development related to assistive technology. From supporting research that produced closed captioned television and the Kurzweil reading machines in the early years, to research that brought us eye-gaze technology and chemistry laboratory instruments in the 1980s, to research that is using virtual reality applications to help children navigate wheelchairs in the present, OSEP has been an innovator in validating tools that increase independence, enhance individualized instruction, and support teachers in ensuring students' success. Technology as a tool for meeting curriculum goals is an important area of focus for OSEP, and one that is showing great promise. Researchers are exploring how students can use technology to act on information and thereby learn. As such, technology is emerging as a cognitive tool or "partner," that supports the learning process. The following research-based applications have been selected to show how technology is being integrated into curriculum and instruction to support a wide range of student abilities.

Kahealani Nae'ole Wong is one of those immersion teachers who has particularly extended the use of technology with full curricular consideration and use by her cohorts at Keaukaha School. After reading throught your site, I would like to propose another sectionon teacher inservicing and the nuts and bolts of that. We need to clone Kahealani for each of our sites. The unique geography of Hawai'i makes technology even more important as we are separated by water. Long distance learning, email, etc. enable us to talk and communicate with each other withoutflying from island to island which can become costly and tiresome since those living on islands like Moloka'i must fly into O'ahu at ungodlyhours. I currently teach a course for immersion teacher education class using interactive television. Although the class numbers below ten students, this technology enables me to reach students on Hawai'i, Maui, and Kaua'i at this time. They can email me questions and or fax their assignments in. I would be very interested in learning more about teacher inservicing, Kahealani. Extractions: Current Situation: Since the implementation of its 1995 Instructional Technology Plan, the Johnston County school system has made an increased effort to infuse technology into instruction. According to the 1998-99 Technology Report, 91% of the schools in the district met their goals for integrating technology into the curriculum. Many teachers are using the Internet and other online resources to access information and educational materials that help them prepare and teach lessons. Regarding student use of technology in North Carolina, 82.1% of Johnston County's eighth graders passed the Computer Skills Test in 1998-99. Results of the Gordon Black Survey administered in the school system in 1999, showed that 81% of the district's students use computers in their regular classrooms, as well as their computer labs, and media centers. Project evaluations from the Writing, Reading, and Technology (WRaT) project that is in place in the school system, validate the use of technology in increased learning, especially in the language arts classes. Since computer graphics is, in a way, a logical development of constructive art, and this tendency has had a notable influence on modern applied graphics, it seems important to me that we should document its possibilities in the field of experimental graphic design." Igildo Biesele predicted revolution in 1981 and it has come to pass. The invasion of technology into the classroom has afforded great advances in student productivity and serves as a tool that emulates the work environment. It is assumed that by technology we are discussing the computer and its ancillaries such as software. The computers incursion into the classroom has also caused several basic dilemmas that educators and college departments must address. The effect of remaining current is obvious on a departments budget but is more subtle on the departments philosophy and on its course content. Though some assume that new technology places the printed word in jeopardy, it has not stifled prose or poetry.

Generally, academic standards describe what needs to be taught, but not when or how to teach it. The following tips will give you guidance on how to use academic standards to determine what to teach and when.
