Extractions: JAKARTA, Indonesia Indonesia is stepping up its efforts to address potential terrorist threats amid growing fears the republic could become a safe haven for al Qaeda and its sympathizers. Indonesia's military has revived its counter-terrorism unit and intelligence authorities are sending a team to the United States to interrogate an al Qaeda suspect arrested in the republic in June this year. The suspect, Omar al-Faruq, reportedly confessed to U.S. authorities of using Indonesia as a base to plan attacks on U.S. embassies across Southeast Asia. A story published last week by Time magazine also quoted regional intelligence reports and a CIA document alleging al-Faruq twice attempted to assassinate Indonesia's President Megawati Sukarnoputri and carried out a string of church bombings in Indonesia that killed 18 people in 2000.

Time.com People Fortune EW Megawati is considered as the political reincarnation of Sukarno By CNN's Atika Shubert JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) It seems that on the 100-year anniversary of the birthday of Sukarno, everyone is invoking the spirit of Indonesia's founding father and first president even its current leader Abdurrahman Wahid. In a day marked by a flurry of ceremonies, President Wahid celebrated a morning event with one of Sukarno's children in tow, younger daughter Rachmawati Sukarnoputri. In his bid to cling on to power, the embattled Wahid had no qualms about using one Sukarno namesake to do battle against another his rival and deputy, Vice President Megawati Sukarnoputri, another Sukarno daughter and heir apparent to the Sukarno legacy. With President Wahid sitting at her side, Rachmawati openly accused her sister's party of violating Sukarno's principles of democracy and nationhood, and also denounced attempts to impeach President Wahid. "This coup d'etat is being carried out in the name of the constitution and democracy," Rachmawati said, adding the country was, as a result, trapped in a "disintegration scenario".

Time.com People Fortune EW JAKARTA, Indonesia The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has blasted the light sentences imposed by an Indonesian court on six men involved in the killing of three of its international aid workers. "The sentences make a mockery of the international community's insistence that justice be done in this horrific case," the UNHCR said in a statement. The six were jailed on Friday for 10-20 months, but had faced up to 34 years in prison over the slayings, which occurred during a rampage by pro-Jakarta East Timorese militias in the West Timor border town of Atambua last September. All six East Timorese men, who consider themselves Indonesian, were convicted of violence against people and property, as opposed to murder, court officials said. "The elements that caused the U.N. officers' deaths cannot be proved to be (linked to the defendants) . . . because the action was perpetrated by a mob," Judge Anak Agung Gede Dalem said when he sentenced three of the men.

Extractions: Travel Tips Moving About Scams and Warnings In regard to border crossings, the latest news is that PNG and Indonesia have agreed to close their only common road border crossing, between Jayapura and Vanimo, because of PNG's concern over the SARS outbreak. They're also clamping down on sea travel between the two countries, although there are no scheduled boat services anyway. This closure makes it impossible to travel directly between the two countries, since there are also no scheduled flights between PNG and Indonesia. The next best way to travel via Cairns from either Port Moresby or Denpassar, but it's a long way round. The closure is valid for 3 months, but that will obviously depend on the spread of SARS. It is part of the Coastal Environment and the water management of the Swamp Schemes is little influenced by its hinterland. The main aim of this Web site is to present a balanced view of Conservation and Development in the Coastal Tidal Wetlands of Indonesia. Come and See the Swamps of Indonesia! Reclaimed swamp land in South Kalimantan Fisherman with rice fields in background Acid Sulphate Soils and Peat soils. In the coastal zones of Indonesia there are 6-8 million ha of mineral and peaty soils, containing pyrite. (Acid Sulphate soils) and there are about 16 million ha of deep Peat soils. That makes Indonesia the country with the far largest area of pyritic soils in the world and one of the largest with peat soils. Reclamation and Development of both soil types is very environmental sensitive. That fact resulted in the recent past in intense discussions whether these wetland/swamp areas should be protected against any type of reclamation. In my opinion a discussion, pro or contra, that is not effective, because these lands are opened up anyhow at a very fast rate. In my believe

Wahid warned Friday that he would declare a state of emergency, a message he delivered just ahead of a proposed meeting of the leaders of all political parties this weekend. But the meeting was put in doubt after aides to Vice President Megawati Sukarnoputri said she would be unlikely to attend. Megawati leads Indonesia's biggest political party. Mordechai, 54, has yet to declare his candidacy, but leaders of a nascent centrist party have all but handed him the mantle. In his final Cabinet meeting as defense chief Sunday, Mordechai donned a skullcap and read a verse from the Book of Psalms implying Netanyahu was a liar and an enemy of peace. "Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips and a deceitful tongue," Mordechai said, citing Psalm 120.

Editorial statement on the terrorist outrage in Bali On October 12, two bombs ripped through a packed discotheque in Bali, killing more than 200 people and injuring some 300. Most of those who died were young people, many of them Australians. Marxists condemn this act of senseless killing. However, the declarations of Bush and Blair are full of the most disgusting hypocrisy. They are taking cynical advantage of the grief and anger at the latest terrorist atrocity for the purpose of drumming up support for their plans for war.(October 15, 2002)

There are said to be over 15'000 islands with more than 80'000 kilometer coastline - that's a lot of potentional area for coral reefs! Indonesia is not so well known and lately many divers don't go there anymore because of the political situation. However this makes for nice uncrowded diving at places like Bali (which usually has a lot of tourists). I have been to Indonesia seven times for extensive diving and just now (summer 2003) visited it again. Some of my greatest dives were done here in Sulawesi Bali and the Komodo islands! I have compiled many pages of information, tips about dive areas, descriptions and maps of dive sites and liveaboards, photos of the underwater animals you will find there, and much more. I hope a look into my pages will make your mouth water and make you want to go to Indonesia! However these are also one of the most endangered reef areas in the world.
