The goal of the program is to develop young investigators who will have a solid foundation in basic biomedical sciences and who will carry out innovative research in immunology. The program features a flexible selection of courses and seminars to enrich students' background in biomedical science, combined with extensive research training through laboratory rotations and thesis research supervised by the immunology faculty. The participating faculty members have internationally recognized research programs in the major areas of modern immunology - cellular, genetic and clinical - and have been leaders in the development of new research approaches in the field. The long tradition of interaction among the immunology laboratories at Stanford fosters highly productive interdisciplinary research, with an emphasis on the application of molecular approaches to problems in cellular and clinical immunology. The training environment is outstanding. Graduate student and postdoctoral trainees in the various immunology research groups get together at seminars, journal clubs, and the annual Stanford Immunology Scientific Conference, and they interact frequently in their research. Students also benefit from the overall excellence in biomedical research and teaching at Stanford.

Extractions: RHEUMATOLOGY FELLOWSHIP ALLERGY/IMMUNOLOGY FELLOWSHIP Rheumatology Division Faculty The Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology of the MGH Department of Medicine encompasses a wide variety of clinical and research disciplines. We recently merged our Allergy and Clinical Immunology Unit and our Arthritis (Rheumatology) Unit into this one Division to enhance research collaboration and clinical partnerships. We provide state-of-the-art care for patients with a wide spectrum of rheumatic, allergic and immunologic disorders and incorporate a wide range of expertise in both basic science and clinical investigation. We focus on the immunologic basis of human inflammatory diseases. We aim to better understand the immunologic mechanisms that either initiate or propagate many inflammatory human diseases will lead to novel therapies any may be effective in multiple disease settings. The Division offers two training programs that prepare fellows for careers in academic allergy, immunology and rheumatology. Our fellowship programs in Allergy and Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology offer trainees expert teaching in a multifaceted environment. Fellows receive extensive research training in clinical investigation or basic laboratory research. Basic science training is offered in our newly created Center for Immunology and Inflammatory Diseases (CIID). The CIID is a state-of-the art multidisciplinary basic science research center within the Division that is focused on basic mechanisms of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. The Clinical Immunology Laboratory, which performs and interprets diagnostic laboratory immunology tests, is part of the Division and is a valuable resource for teaching fellows and facilitating translational research.
