Extractions: As humans, we like turning to biology for inspiration, when we are faced with hard technological problems. For example, the Wright brothers studied the flight of birds in designing planes with flexible, twisting wings and an aerofoil shape to provide lift. Today, researchers seeking answers to the technological issue of securing computer networks are emulating the Wrights in turning to nature for solutions. Current security is inadequate, as evinced by the rash of worms, viruses and others forms of attacks that have plagued computer networks over the last few years. But the human immune system faces an even tougher problem in protecting the body against a bewildering array of diseases and micro-organisms. And our immune system has to secure an environment vastly more complex than all computer networks put together. So the temptation to draw parallels between computer security and human immunology is understandable and, at times, worthwhile and inspiring. But taken too far, it can also lead us down paths that may prove to be dead ends.
Extractions: Graduate Studies Homepage The Graduate Program in Immunology, Microbiology and Vaccine Biology is an integrated graduate program that provides predoctoral training and Ph.D. research opportunities in the areas of Immunology, Microbiology and Vaccine Biology. This graduate program is based at the University of Rochester Medical Center (Rochester, New York) and it is administered principally by faculty from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and the Center for Vaccine Biology and Immunology . Other participating Departments and Centers include the Departments of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Chemical Engineering, Dermatology, Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics and Psychiatry, the Center for Oral Biology and the University of Rochester Cancer Center. This doctoral program seeks to provide an outstanding training environment for the predoctoral education of the next generation of immunologists and microbiologists who will be working in academic institutions, industry, government laboratories and private research foundations. This environment includes: outstanding Ph.D. research opportunities; concerned, skilled, and interactive research mentors whose research addresses a wide diversity of scientific questions; state-of-the art research facilities; newly redesigned graduate level lecture courses; advanced topical seminars; and opportunities to attend and actively participate in scientific meetings providing a wide range of faculty expertise and research opportunities.

Extractions: study the genetic background of the immune system in fish. It has been shown that the humoral immune response in fish, particularly in cod, is poor in comparison to that of mammals and birds. We do comparative studies to try and find the reason for this phenomenon. We also do comparative studies on IgG and IgM between different fish and mammals.
Extractions: There currently are about 330 Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigators. Widely recognized for their creativity and productivity, they include several Nobel Prize winners and more than 70 members of the National Academy of Sciences. HHMI investigators have been involved in many important recent advances, from the discovery of genes related to cystic fibrosis, obesity, and other diseases, to new insights about how human cells develop or communicate. The scientists are employed by HHMI and conduct their work at HHMI facilities at leading research institutions nationwide under collaborative relationships with those institutions.
