As in that larger confrontation, there has been some tendency for Conservatives to speak with great caution, lest their words be misconstrued by those whose principal argument is always to cast aspersion on the motives of others. Many who would like to see immigration sharply curtailed, or drawn more from human stocks that played the greatest role in formulating the traditional American ethos (the National Origins approach, which worked reasonably well between 1920 and 1965), have hesitated, lest they be pictured as "racist xenophobes" or fear-driven foes of any change. Others hesitate, lest they say things which may hurt the feelings of people they work with, or with whom their children go to school. We have dealt in Chapter Thirteen with the question of how to identify The Bigot in the Argument , and with the actual implications of the Leftist denial of human differences in Chapter Five, as well as in Chapter Seven (The Lies Of Socialism). These will have some bearing on questions that pertain to the formulation of a wiseor at least intelligentimmigration policy. But a more specifically focused discussion on some widely held, and avidly promoted, fallacies is in order here. Consider:

We dialogued and formally debated on several occasions, and I moderated public forums in which Mark took part. If dialogue has any meaning, if speakers actually listen to each other rather than close their ears and merely wait impatiently to say their say, then the possibility that one can change as a result of what one hears must be acknowledged. The Socratic method was alive and well in our exchanges, and I did. Perhaps its principal contribution to challenging my point of view was having the opportunity to listen to my own side's thesis articulated by those willing to take it to its extreme, and their reductio ad absurdum made plain the very great dangers within it.

It wasn't until 1965 that the last of America's restrictions towards Chinese immigration was finally repealed. I am President of the Ezell Group, which is an international financial and business consulting firm based in Newport Beach. Years ago, I founded a chain of restaurants, so I have considerable real-world business experience. Based in part on that experience, President Ronald Reagan appointed me to be Western Regional Commissioner for the INS. While I was Western Commissioner, we implemented the Immigration Reform and Control Act, including both the amnesty provisions and sanctions on employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens. I left the INS after the Reagan administration to return to the private sectorgratefullybut I have stayed active in the immigration debate. In 1992, the House Republican Leadership appointed me to serve on the U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform, which is a bipartisan Congressional advisory commission. It is important to hear that word "bipartisan," because immigration isn't a partisan political issue. All of the Commission's recommendations have been unanimous, or with only one dissenter. This from a nine-member Commission with Reagan Republicans and Tip O'Neill Democrats on it, who don't agree on anythingexcept on how important it is to preserve our heritage as a nation of immigrants dedicated to the rule of law.

Manzanar War Relocation Center - In 1942, almost 120,000 Japanese Americans and resident Japanese aliens living on the West Coast were forced to move from their homes to 10 relocation camps located throughout the United States. It was the largest forced relocation in U.S. history. The Manzanar camp, located in eastern California's Owens Valley, is the best preserved of the 10 camps. Mendocino Joss House - Settlers often built small temples, or "Joss Houses" in the Chinese communities that sprung up throughout California in the mid-nineteenth century. Oral history dates construction of this Taoist Kwan Tai Temple in Mendocino, about 150 miles north of San Francisco, at about 1854, making it the oldest original temple in California.
