Extractions: Promising Practices Welfare Information Network CHILD CARE FACILITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Project Purpose : To construct or substantially renovate a total of seven child care facilities in needy neighborhoods in Illinois. Program and/or Services During the construction phase for the neighborhood facilities, the Child Care Facility Development Program selected non-profit, community-based child care agencies to manage them. Selection was based upon demonstrated need for a new facility; financial strength and management capacity; history of providing quality child care; comprehensiveness of the proposed program; involvement of the community in their plans; and the viability and cost of the proposed facility project. Once selected, the child care agencies received management development training from the Child Care Facility Development Program. Upon completion of the building, the participating child care agencies were required to provide, in addition to child care, family support services to the families using the centers. Of the seven centers now in operation, three centers provide Head Start services, two have health clinics, and two are "campuses" for child care provider training, as well as other programs, including job training, day care for the elderly, and a specialized elementary school. The program serves a total of 1,385 children in low-income families.
Extractions: (24 hrs/day) Financial Help for Brownfields Investigations and Cleanups Brownfields are abandoned or underused industrial and commercial properties that have actual or perceived contamination and an active potential for redevelopment. Brownfields vary in size, location, age, and past use. They can be anything from a multi-acre closed factory to a vacant gas station on the corner. Sometimes, brownfields sites are orphan sites, meaning that the company or individual who caused the contamination is bankrupt, defunct, or deceased. Other times, the person who caused the environmental contamination cannot afford to fully investigate and clean up the site. The Illinois EPA vigorously supports efforts to clean up brownfields properties so they may be put back into productive use. Besides offering technical assistance and innovative cleanup methods, the Illinois EPA offers financial help for brownfields site investigations and cleanups. Many of these financial tools are designed for use by municipalities or private parties that did not cause the contamination.
