Extractions: CONFERENCE OVERVIEW Nonpoint source pollution begins and ends with each of us. "Information and education". . ."I & E" . . . they're popular buzz phrases among those working to solve water pollution problems. What's behind this increasing attention to information and education? Also known as people pollution, nonpoint source pollution control relies on people changing behaviors. Quite simply, our message must be brought before and understood by the public in order for them to change. Many people have never been exposed to such terms as "nonpoint source pollution" (does your next-door neighbor know what it is?). But, when these same people come to understand the important role they can play in reducing pollution through simple changes in their everyday actions and behaviors, we're making real progress. REGISTRATION The Conference registration fee of $240 includes three breakfasts, three luncheons, refreshment breaks, a terrific reception and dinner at the Chicago Botanic Garden, written materials, and Conference proceedings. There are no discounts available for students or single-day registrations. There is an additional $55 registration fee for each of the three Pre-Conference Workshops on Monday, October 20. (you may attend only one since each is an all-day program). You may register for a Pre-Conference Workshop without attending the full Conference.

Extractions: Quackwatch Home Page Promoters of questionable health practices often form organizations to multiply their effectiveness. How can one tell which groups are reliable and which are not? There is no sure way, but eight precautionary questions may help: 1. Are its ideas inside the scientific mainstream? Some groups admit that they were formed because their founders felt alienated from the scientific community. One group that made no secret of this was actually called the American Quack Association , whose main purposes were to provide emotional support to its members, poke fun at their critics, and stimulate positive public feelings toward unconventional practitioners. The group was founded in 1985 by Jonathan Wright, M.D., who became its president, and Roy Kupsinel, M.D., a "holistic" practitioner from Florida, who became its vice-president. It attracted about 300 members but no longer appears active. 2. Who are its leaders and advisors? The International Society for Fluoride Research may sound respectable, but it is actually an antifluoridation group. The International Academy of Preventive Medicine (now called the International Academy of Nutrition and Preventive Medicine) numbered among its leaders Carlton Fredericks, Linus Pauling Lendon Smith,

If enacted, the regional accrediting agencies would use the guidelines to set standards for granting accreditation to distance-education programs and institutions." "Representatives of the six U.S. regional accrediting bodies have finalized a set of recommendations for building and evaluating online-education programs. But the recommendations won't become accreditation standards, says Charles M. Cook, the director of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges' Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. 'We've always considered them testimonials, not a new set of standards,' he says. 'It's always been the local regions' option of how to adopt them.'"
