"Early High School Baseball In Illinois" Every city and town across the country and illinois had amateur baseball teams ThroughoutNew England, and especially in the famed boarding schools of the era http://www.ihsa.org/feature/hstoric/earlybb.htm
Extractions: pruter@comcast.net Baseball among Illinois high schoolers did not begin in the schools, but rather in the amateur-team system of organization that prevailed in baseball in the mid-19th century. Every city and town across the country and Illinois had amateur baseball teams, and the game flourished at age levels from kids in knee-pants to balding adults. There were even rare instances of women playing the game. Chicago and its suburbs in particular were rich with amateur club teams. Stephen Freedman, in his exploration of early amateur baseball in Chicago called "The Baseball Fad in Chicago, 1865-1870," reported on a virtual explosion of amateur club activity in the immediate post-Civil War years. The flowering of baseball in Chicago, according to Freedman, "represented but a single expression of a sudden nation-wide interest in the sport, which was manifested to the greatest extent in America's urban centers." The rage to play was so great and the hold of the game with the population was so deep that as secondary schools were being established across the state during the 1860s and 1870s schoolboys took up the sport. It undoubtedly began as an intramural activity at first at picnics and other social functions, and proved to be a popular interclass contest. Eventually there came a point where the school boys would look at the public school in the next town, or the amateur club, private school, and university in their town as a possible opponent and a challenge was issued. But it was a slow process in which baseball eventually entered the high schools as an extramural activity.

On 15 December, 1850, the motherhouse was transferred to Milwaukee, with Mother Mary Caroline Friess as vicar-general of the sisters in America. With money donated by King Louis I of Bavaria, a house was bought; this was absorbed later by Notre Dame Convent on St. Mary's Hill. On 2 January, 1851, St. Mary's parish school was opened and St. Mary's Institute for boarding and day pupils soon afterwards. On 31 July, 1876, owing to its growth and extension, the congregation was divided into two provinces; the Western, with motherhouse at Milwaukee; and the Eastern with motherhouse at Baltimore. A second division of the Western province became necessary, and on 19 March, 1895, the Southern province was formed, with its motherhouse in St. Louis. Training of Members SR. MARY JOSEPHINE

The free public program is co-sponsored by the center and the universitys Office of Diversity Affairs. Adams joined CSU in 1974 after teaching social studies at Ridgewood High School in Norridge from 1964 to 1971. Adams said, In the late 19th- and 20th-centuries, the Bureau of Indian Affairs placed Native American children in boarding schools hundreds of miles from their homes. "In such 'total institutions,' it was believed Indian children's attachments to their native ways could be stripped away by learning the cultural ways of the white man.

Extractions: Search Rethinking Schools Help Home Archive Volume 13, No. 4 - Summer 1999 Fiction Posing As Truth Authors' note: This March, Debbie Reese (Nambe), a doctoral student who studies representations of Native Americans in children's literature, saw My Heart Is On the Ground: The Dairy of Nannie Little Rose, a Sioux Girl in a local bookstore. She picked it up, put it down in distaste, but then decided it couldn't be ignored. Reading through the book, she was outraged and called Beverly Slapin of Oyate and read excerpts to her. Beverly did not look forward to reading it herself. A day later and equally outraged, Beverly called it the "worst book she had ever read." Both women began talking about this book to colleagues. Debbie wrote to Barb Landis, a research specialist on Carlisle School, the Native American boarding school that is at the core of the book. Barb had also read the book and also felt it was an outrageous depiction of a tragic period in Native American history. We are fully aware we have used the word "outraged" three times in this piece so far, but there is no other word that captures the intensity of emotion we all feel about this book. A series of Internet and telephone discussions followed, and the circle grew to the nine women who are listed alphabetically below.
