The 45-year-old musher waved to hundreds of cheering spectators Thursday as he led his eight-dog team to victory at 1:47 a.m. He finished ahead of Ramy Brooks and three-time Iditarod champion Jeff King. "I'm feeling very well," Sorlie said before he hugged his wife, Elin Pedersen, in the winner's circle. It was only the second time Sorlie had made the 1,100-mile trip from Anchorage to Nome, a town of 3,500 along the frozen Bering Sea. Sorlie is the second non-Alaskan to win the Iditarod and the second winner born outside the United States. Doug Swingley of Lincoln, Montana, won four times and Martin Buser, a Swiss native who has lived in Alaska more than 20 years, became a U.S. citizen after winning his fourth Iditarod last year.

Extractions: The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race , usually called " the Iditarod ", is an annual dog-sled race in Alaska , U.S., that commemorates a 1925 relay to transport anti- diphtheria serum from Anchorage, Alaska , to Nome, Alaska , to combat an outbreak of the disease. The vaccine went by train from Anchorage to Nenana, Alaska , and then a series of dog mushers took it overland a total of 674 miles (1085 km) in 127.5 hours. The trail for the race does not follow the route the vaccine took in 1925 but, instead, a trail through largely unpopulated tundra that was chosen to test the mettle of the sled dogs and their drivers. It is named for the ghost town of Iditarod, Alaska , it passes through, which was an Athabascan Indian village before gold was discovered nearby in 1908; a town was built there which became the center of the Iditarod Mining District in 1910, but it did not outlast the local gold-rush. On March 20 Libby Riddles became the first woman to win the race. The event is critized by animal rights activists, as dogs dying because of exhaustion during the trail are rather common. Extractions: Anchorage 2001 Originally, the trail served as a supply route for materials from the coastal towns of Seward and Knik to the gold fields and camps in Northwest Alaska in the early 1900's. Mushers hauled mail and supplies to towns such as Iditarod and Nome and brought out just-mined gold. In 1925, it gained international fame when a team of mushers and dogs raced against time and the elements to relay diphtheria serum to Nome. The youngest musher ever to race was 18 years old, the oldest was 86 years old. Sled dog racing is the only professional sport where men and women compete equally; there are no men's and women's divisions. In 1985 Libby Riddles was the first woman to win the Iditarod. Susan Butcher won the next 3 consecutive years and again in 1990. A popular saying during the 1980's was "Alaska, where men are men, and women win the Iditarod".

Some mushers may have to buy dog food for the Canada drop points across the border. "Man, that's crazy," said one musher. "We wouldn't make much difference with the mad cow situation - everything is staying frozen and it's just going to be fed to the dogs." Quest mushers are now trying to figure out how to prepare for the race, which starts in Fairbanks on Feb. 14. "He kicked the dog in the head and it screamed in pain and again in the head and then carefully, aimed carefully and with great force, in the side just to the rear of the rib cage. The dog's screams had gone on all this time but with the last kick- the blow must have almost literally exploded the dog's liver- the dog fell back and grew still and it was all over...."
