Extractions: Iditarod official site FAIRBANKS, Alaska (CNN) A group of 64 mushers from all over the world on Monday officially begins this year's Iditarod, billed as the "Last Great Race" and arguably the best-known sled-dog race in the world. A ceremonial start was staged Saturday in Anchorage for the mushers, or sled drivers, amid unusually warm weather and rain that forced the city to search for enough snow to cover streets for the yearly event. But the action won't really begin until the "restart" in Fairbanks at 10 a.m. (2 p.m. EST) Monday. The official opening was moved about 350 miles north because of the warmer weather, the most dramatic relocation in race history, Iditarod spokesman Stan Hooley said. This year's race will miss roughly a third of the usual route and go about 100 miles farther than usual before ending in Nome after about a 1,200-mile trek.

Extractions: The Iditarod: Commemorating the 1925 Emergency Delivery of Diphtheria Serum to Nome, Alaska The Iditarod is run each year to commemorate the emergency delivery in 1925 of diphtheria antitoxin to Nome, Alaska. Nome in 1925 had changed from a booming, boisterous turn-of-the-century gold-rush camp into a small, quite town of about 1,500 people. It was fifteen years since the end of the gold-rush, but Nome remained an important settlement on the Seward Peninsula. Dr. Curtis Welch The First Signs of an Epidemic It was a normal mid-January afternoon in Nome. Doctor Curtis Welch, physician and director of the US Public Health Service, was doing paperwork in his office at the Merchants and Miners Bank of Alaska building. An Eskimo man came into the office asking the doctor to come quickly, his two children were very sick. Dr. Welch raced to the Sand Spit Eskimo settlement, west of the Snake River on the fringes of Nome. The children's temperatures were dangerously high, and their breathing was labored and shallow. Dr. Welch asked the mother how the children had become ill and what their symptoms had been. She replied that they had been sick for about three days. She thought it was a bad cold because their throats had become red and sore. Dr. Welch tried to examine their throats, but they could not open their mouths far enough for him to do so. He tried to comfort the mother and then returned to his office.

Extractions: On January 27, 1925, "Wild Bill" Shannon and his dog team set out from Nenana, Alaska on the first leg of the relay to Nome. The last leg reached Nome on Monday, February 2 at 5:30 in the morning. Dr. Welch was awakened by a persistent knocking on his front door. When he opened it he found an exhausted Gunnar Kaasen, the musher of the final leg of the relay. Kaasen handed him a twenty pound, fur-and-canvas-covered package containing the 300,000 units of serum. In the street were his 13 dogs harnessed to a sled, their heads and bushy tails hanging almost to the ground. They had covered the last fifty-three miles of the epic relay in seven and a half hours. These dogs, and the teams that preceeded them, had traversed 674 ice-and-snow covered miles in less than five days. They delivered to Dr. Welch the life-saving serum that within a week would break the back of the diphtheria epidemic. Almost forgotten is the fact that five days later a second batch of serum arrived in Seward Alaska. It was shipped in record time by train to Nenana and again relayed by dog teams as far as Unalakeleet (a little of 200 miles from Nome). Many of the original mushers were in the second run. Twenty teams relayed the medicine 674 miles in 27.5 hours! Today this historic event is commemorated with the world famous Iditarod Sled Dog Race. The competition starts in Anchorage on the first Saturday in March. The first musher arrives in Nome approximately 10- 1 2 days later. Teams continue to arrive day and night for the next week and a half. H ISTORY O F T HE R ED L ANTERN During the days of Alaska sled dog freighting and mail carrying, dog drivers relied on a series of roadhouses between their village destinations. Since these mushers ventured out in all types of weather they decided to use a "flight plan." Word was relay ed ahead that a musher and team were on the trail, and a kerosene lamp was lit and hung outside the roadhouse. It not only helped the dog driver find his destination at night, but more importantly, it signified that a team or teams were somewhere out on the trail. The lamp was not extinguished until the musher safely reached his destination. Beginning in 1986, Chevron USA continued the tradition by hanging a "Red Lantern," as it is known today, on the burl arch in Nome. Each year the lantern is lit at the beginning of the race and hung on the finish line, not to be extinguished until the very last musher crosses the finish line. Once the musher crosses the line, (s)he then extinguishes the lantern, signifying the official end of the race. Thus, the last musher in a race is called the "Red Lantern" musher.
