They work with training, good nutrition, care, and love to make the most of each dog's potential. Because of their love of dogs and dedication to the sport of mushing, Rob and Cara make many public appearances and initiate programs for school children each year. Rob also works on the board of directors for The Race To The Sky. In the 94-95 race season, Rob and "the kids" (the dogs) placed in the top ten in four of the five races they entered. In the fifth race (in which they did not place in the top ten), they received the "Best Cared for Team" award. Rob competed in Montana's Race To The Sky 350-mile sled dog race in 1992, 1995 (placed 7th), 1996 (placed 2nd), 1997 (placed 14th), 1998 (placed 3rd), and 1999 (placed 7th). In 1998 Rob also raced in the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon in Minnesota, and finished in 11th place. He has also participated in many other races and placed well with the team. His sled dog racing is often "family vacation time," and a great time to get together with other friends/mushers. GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania (AP) A pair of trailblazers will try to break a record for crossing Alaska's Iditarod trail on foot. Tim Hewitt and Tom Jarding are preparing for the annual "Iditasport Impossible" race that runs the same 1,100-mile course as the better-known Iditarod dog sled race. Three years ago, they trudged the course in 26 days, 20 hours and 14 minutes, beating the old record by two full weeks. The following year, Italy's Roberto Ghidoni broke their record with 22 days, 6 hours and 6 minutes. "It's the toughest race in the world," Hewitt said. "They went 15 years with no one completing the race on foot. In fact, there are more people who have walked on the moon than have completed this on foot." Racers from across the world will follow the route on mountain bike, skis or running shoes, towing sleds with equipment that will keep them alive in the Alaskan wilderness. The annual human-powered race will start a week ahead of the dog sled race next month.

    Extractions: Karen has finished IDITAROD 2004 North Wapiti Kennels has successfully completed the 1000+ mile Iditarod Sled Dog race in 2001 and 2004 using only purebred Siberian Huskies. The North Wapiti team finished the 2001 race with more dogs than any other Iditarod 2001 team, being the only team to finish with 15 of the 16 dogs that started the race. During the 2004 race, despite a broken sled, the team was able to better their personal best finish time by over two and a half days!     Extractions: Since it is Iditarod time again, I thought it might be nice to relive those exciting days in 1994 when Malamutes ran the trail and proved that the breed could still do what it originally had been bred to do. Nancy Russell, owner of Storm Kloud Kennel in Sussex, Wisconsin, dreamed of having an Iditarod team ever since the race started in 1973. Nancy met musher Jamie Nelson of Togo, Minnesota, at a freight race in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, in 1987. Shortly after, she sent two dogs to Jamie to be trained as lead dogs. In 1989, Nancy took a litter of six puppies to Jamie to develop into a team for promotional purposes. Jamie was impressed with the working ability of the Malamutes and the idea of an Iditarod team became a real possibility. By the fall of 1993, Jamie had 20 Malamutes in training and finally decided to enter the race. Because of the lateness of this decision, it was not possible to obtain commercial sponsors, so money was raised through mile sponsorships, the Alaskan Malamute Club of America, and several all-breed dog clubs. The remainder was paid by Storm Kloud Kennel. (All ages and weights are those at the time of the Iditarod.)
