Extractions: C ommunity P arent R esource C enter (CPRC) Idaho Parents Unlimited, Inc., (IPUL) a non-profit organization, has been awarded funds from the US Department of Education to develop, support and evaluate a community parent center project to serve Idaho Hispanic parents of children with disabilities. This will be a three year project, starting October 1, 2002 under the sponsorship and governance of IPUL to: identify and establish regional support groups of Hispanic parents of children with disabilities; form a Hispanic Community Advisory Board based on this network; establish priorities based on culturally appropriate goals and activities identified by the Advisory Board; and provide bilingual training, information and support to Hispanic families in geographical areas with significant Hispanic populations. A bilingual Project Director will be responsible for supporting these activities and receive additional assistance through identifying and hiring a part-time Bilingual Parent Education Coordinator for the southeastern parts of the state. The Hispanic community in Idaho is our largest ethnic minority population and faces barriers that are both cultural and language-based in accessing traditionally Caucasian dominated educational services. In addition, many families of Hispanic origin are migrant workers and live in rural areas, two additional barriers to effective participation in their child's educational process. The State Improvement Grant has allowed IPUL to demonstrate the necessity of providing bilingual, community based services in order to support Hispanic families of children with disabilities. Idaho Parents Unlimited, Inc. served 200+ families of Hispanic origin in 2000-2001, a 425 percent increase over the program year 1998-1999 before funding. IPUL credits this increase to our part time Bilingual Coordinator, former bilingual region coordinator Hortencia Lemus, based in Nampa/Caldwell where the increase occurred. The Bilingual Coordinator provided one on one phone support, held 4 workshops during the 2000-2001 program year and provided two sessions in Spanish at our annual statewide conference, as well as coordinated translator services for other Conference sessions. The CPRC Spanish program will greatly expand the amount of services IPUL can provide in 2002-2005
