Extractions: Hydropower Hydropower facilities capture the kinetic energy of falling water to generate electricity. Hydropower is currently the largest source of renewable power, generating approximately 10% of the electricity used in the United States. The most common type of hydropower plant uses a dam on a river to store water in a reservoir. Water released from the reservoir flows through a turbine, spinning it, which, in turn, activates a generator to produce electricity. But hydropower doesn't necessarily require a large dam. Some hydropower plants just use a small canal to channel the river water through a turbine. Low-impact hydropower certification is of growing interest. In order to be qualified as a Green-e resource in Pennsylvania, a hydropower facility must already be in operation and have the ability to generate no more than 30 MW of electricity. Green-e organizations are currently working to develop a more detailed set of requirements to identify only "Low Impact" hydroelectric facilities as qualified Green-e resources. Hydropower Links Low Impact Hydropower Institute (LIHI) . LIHI is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the certification of environmentally responsible, "low impact" hydropower. The Low Impact Hydropower Institute was established to develop and administer a voluntary program to certify hydropower facilities with environmental impacts that are low compared to other hydropower facilities, based on objective environmental criteria. The goal of the Low Impact Hydropower Certification Program is to reduce the environmental impacts of hydropower generation, by creating an accepted standard for consumers to use in evaluating hydropower.

ORNL conducts assessments and other studies associated with licensing hydropower projects for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. It also performs research for the Department of Energy and others on methods to avoid or minimize the environmental impacts of hydropower projects and provides advice to other state and federal agencies and private industry. Sale is leader of the Hydrosystems Group in the division's Ecosystems Studies Section and program manager for FERC projects for the Energy Division . Coutant is a senior ecologist in the Environmental Sciences Division. hy is hydropower important to the United States? Mike Sale: The energy of flowing water is the most readily available, renewable, and clean domestic source of electricity that we have right now. It is available in most parts of the country that have high rainfall and mountainous areas. In terms of total production, hydropower is America's leading renewable energy resource; it is more reliable and efficient and less expensive than geothermal, biomass, wind, and solar energy. Perhaps most important, it is a clean source of powerit produces no carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxides, or any other air emissions. In addition, it produces no solid or liquid wastes.

A few companies will custom design and build a hydropower system, assuming you have a high enough head. But their hydropower systems are not really designed for the single home site. The price is very high! The Alternate Energy Sourcebook published by the Real Goods Trading Corporation offers two hydroelectric systems. Both of these systems are designed to operate on a minimum head of 20 feet and 100 gallons of water flow per minute. The "standard" output is 400 watts @ 12 Volts Direct Current or 700 watts @ 24 Volts Direct Current. In their book they site the following as a "typical" installation.

The History of Electricity Hydroelectric Power Hydroelectric power, or hydroelectricity, is generated by the force of falling water. ( Hydro hydroelectric power plants are able provide electricity at a reasonable cost to families, schools, farms, factories, and businesses. How does hydroelectric power work? Water is needed to run a hydroelectric power-generating unit . The water is held behind a dam, forming an artificial lake, or reservoir. The force of the water being released from the reservoir through the dam spins the blades of a giant turbine. The turbine is connected to the generator that makes electricity as it spins. After passing through the turbine, the water flows back into the river on the other side of the dam. TVA uses water to make electricity at 29 hydroelectric dams and one pumped-storage power plant (at Raccoon Mountain near Chattanooga, Tennessee). Together these plants produced about 13.5 million megawatt hours of electricity in 2002, or about 9 percent of the total amount of electricity.
