[Change image] [Upload image] THE HUNGARIAN PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC emerged in 1949 after the Hungarian Workers' Party eliminated its rivals and assumed control of the state. Soviet control of Eastern Europe after World War II had enabled a minuscule communist party lacking popular support to gain power in the country and gradually eliminate its political rivals. Under Matyas Rakosi the party consolidated its control and radically transformed the country economically socially and politically. In the mid-1950s after the Soviet Union had somewhat relaxed its control of Eastern Europe Hungarian society began to mobilize against the regime culminating in the Revolution of 1956. Soviet troops crushed the rebellion leaving power in the hands of Janos Kadar. After consolidating his authority Kadar embarked on a program of economic reform in the mid-1960s. Like other countries of Eastern Europe Hungary has a history of class religious and ethnic conflicts that were intensified and sometimes decided by the actions of larger more powerful neighbors. Beginning in the tenth century German and Bohemian missionaries converted the Magyars. In the early eleventh century Bavarian knights helped Stephen I eliminate rivals and quash peasant revolts. Suleyman the Magnificent's Ottoman armies conquered and partitioned the country with the Habsburgs in the sixteenth century expediting the spread of Protestant faiths. Habsburg rulers colonized Hungary with non-Magyars repressed its Protestants stifled its economic development and attempted to Germanize its people. The Entente powers carved up Hungary after World War I and distributed most of the land to new nation-states. Finally dictator Joseph Stalin enforced Soviet domination over postwar Hungary.

Extractions: A Passionate Fight For Freedom Hungary has long been an integral part of Europe first as a monarchy for nearly 1,000 years, then as a Communist state, and finally a democracy. Its constitutional system preceded by several centuries the establishment of Western-style governments in other European countries. The region that now comprises Hungary was once part of the ancient Roman province of Pannonia. Situated on the periphery of the Roman Empire, the region was among the first to fall to the Germanic tribes that began to seize the Roman dominions in the closing years of the 2nd century AD. The Germanic tribes were later driven from the region by the Huns. Numerous warring tribes occupied the region for hundreds of years until a new era began with the first millennium and Stephen I, the founder of the Arpad dynasty , who was granted formal recognition as king of Hungary by Pope Sylvester II in 1001 or 1002. Christianity became the official religion, paganism was suppressed, royal authority was centralized, and the country was divided into counties for administrative purposes. The non-Magyar sections of the population were treated as inferior and were forced to shoulder a disproportionate burden of labor and taxation for many centuries. When Stephen died in 1038 the country was left without a direct heir to the throne. However, years later, the progressive political groups of Hungary won a decisive victory in the legislative election of 1847. At first the Austrian government ignored the voters' mandate, but when threatened by revolution in Vienna the following year, it yielded to Hungarian nationalist demands and authorized the formation of a Hungarian ministry. A nationalistic struggle followed until World War I, when Hungarian political leaders supported the Austrian war effort largely because they feared that a Russian victory would lead to the defection of Hungary's Slavic minorities and the dismemberment of the country. On June 4, 1920, the Hungarian government accepted the Treaty of Trianon, which was part of the World War I peace settlements. The treaty stripped about two-thirds of Hungary's territory, including Transylvania, Croatia, and Slovakia.

Stephen was converted to Christianity. After his death, he was canonized. An abbey was set up at Tihany. The foundation charter was drawn up on the northern shore of Lake Balaton. This is the earliest written record extant in the Hungarian language. The Mongolian Tatars devastated the country. Their presence, which lasted a year, halted development for at least a century. After the warfare with the Hungarians, the Tatars did not continue towards the west. The Turks occupied Buda. Hungary was split into three parts. The Habsburg governed the western part of the country, the central area was ruled by the Turks, and the south-east Transylvanian principality (today part of Roumania) for a long time was the citadel of Hungarian culture. Buda was recaptured from the Turks. (The Turks - similarly to the Tartars - could only advance in Europe to the territory of Hungary. Here they were faced by obstacles, after which no strength was left for the siege of Vienna.) To avoid this risk, the account that follows (the initial Overview and the Checklist of dates apart) has been arranged to start at the present with which the reader is assumed to be at least vaguely familiar and then work its way back to successively earlier antecedents of conditions and events.

Extractions: At the end of the nineteenth century, there were more than two million Germans living in Hungary. During the eighteenth century, the Habsburg monarchy of Austria, which ruled Hungary at that time, had enticed Germans to emigrate to the unsettled lands of Southern Hungary, which had been devastated by over 150 years of Turkish occupation. From 1711 to 1750, approximately 800 villages were founded in Hungary by German settlers. The Banat Province was one of the primary areas of settlement. The Habsburgs had become the ruling monarchy in Hungary in 1527, following the death of King Louis II of Hungary. King Louis was killed defending Hungarian territory against the Turks (Ottoman Empire) at the Battle of Mohacs in 1526. After Mohacs, the Turks dominated two-thirds of Hungary, including the Banat. The remaining portion was ruled by the Habsburgs. War with the Turks continued throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The Austrian Imperial Army commanded by Prince Eugene of Savoy was finally successful in driving them out. A peace settlement at Karlowitz in 1699 brought Hungary, except for the Banat, under control of the Habsburg Emperor Leopold I. Later, Price Eugene captured the Banat, and the province was ceded to the Habsburg Emperor Charles VI after the Treaty of Passarovitz. The Banat was considered a crown territory of the Holy Roman Empire from 1718 to 1778 and was administered from Vienna during that period.

During the last 1000 years, foreign religions, cultures, languages, political regimes and rulers have been forced upon the Hungarians. As a result, the original ancient Hungarian culture, religion and language have been persecuted and suppressed. H ungary suffered numerous foreign invasions which resulted in the widespread decimation of the Hungarian population and in the partition and dismemberment of Hungary's territory. Foreign occupation and rule brought foreign colonization and exploitation. Hungarians became a minority and second-class citizens in their own country as the key positions in the state administration, the churches, industry, commerce, finance, media, arts, education and other professions were dominated by foreigners due to the anti-Hungarian policies of the foreign rulers and regimes. H ungarians have repeatedly attempted to liberate themselves from foreign oppression. The struggle to reassert Hungarian national interests and cultural identity against foreign political, economic and cultural imperialism and colonialism continues to this day. The apparent end of communism in 1990 did not bring the promised and expected national renewal. The injustices of the past were not redressed. The old elites and their collaborators are still in power and still serving foreign interests. The Hungarian nation still faces a long and hard struggle to achieve real political, economic and cultural self-determination.

Bibliography INTRODUCTION This study was first presented at the Canadian Hungarian Studies Association's 1996 annual conference, on the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of the foundation of the Hungarian State. It is essentially a summary overview of the principal theories in the research on the origins and early history of the Hungarians, with the objective of determining a scientifically acceptable alternative orientation in a field which has been dominated for the past 150 years by political and ideological interests. The purpose of this paper is therefore to outline a more objective perspective by examining the principal research orientations regarding the origins and early history of the Hungarians. The historical period in question covers the time span from the first Neolithic settlement of the Carpathian Basin (5000 BC) to the Christianization of Hungary nearly 1000 years ago. What is it exactly that is being celebrated on the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of Hungary's founding in 896 AD? Is it Árpád's "pagan" Hungary or king István's (Stephen) Christian Hungary? Opinions differ greatly on this complex question. In general, contemporary Hungarian historiography seems to be concentrating more on the last 1000 years of Hungarian history from a predominantly Western point of view, thereby artificially restricting Hungarian history and isolating it from its pre-Christian historical and cultural roots which are often misrepresented or ignored. Hungarian history needs to be reassessed in a broader and more balanced perspective.
