The relationship can be said to have been pioneered by the great Hungarian Indologist Alexander Korosi de Csoma (first half of 19th century) who died in India and enriched by fond memories of the visit of Rabindranath Tagore to Hungary in 1926. The Hungarian language is taught in Delhi University while Sanskrit (for more than a century) and Hindi are taught in Hungarian universities. New Delhi enjoys the distinction of hosting the only Hungarian Cultural Centre in Asia which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 1998. Catering to the deep-rooted interest in Indian culture in Hungary, several cultural activities have been undertaken by the Mission from time to time, with the support of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Hungarian Ministry of Culture. The Indo-Hungarian Friendship Association set up in 1988 is very active. Many cultural activities relating to India are organised by Hungarian municipalities and cultural organisations, with the full support of the Indian Embassy. Highly professional Hungarian artists trained in Indian classical music and dance perform regularly on such occasions. Courses in Indian Culture and Hindi language are also conducted by the Embassy. Regular exchanges of scholars and academics has been taking place under the Indo-Hungarian Cultural Exchange Programme (CEP). The present CEP was renewed for 1999-2001.
