Judge is managing director of the White House Writers Group, a public policy communications firm. F Fallen Empires Dean Acheson titled his memoirs Present at the Creation, the creation being the years immediately following the Second World War when many of our current international institutions were founded. Yet while the late 1940s and early 1950s proved formative in many ways, these years were not the big bang of the modern moment. To find the death of an old international universe and the violent, consuming birth of a new star of history that still blinds us with its light and challenges our comprehension, we must reach back farther. The First World War led to the shattering of three imperial systems, and it is not too much to say that the world is still struggling with their demise and that of the international system of which they were so integral a part. The three imperial systems were the uneasy German imperial brotherhood of Prussia-dominated Germany and Vienna-centered Austria-Hungary, the Russian Empire, and the Ottoman Empire. From this perspective, the three major post-war struggles have been part of a single struggle about the character of the successor regimes and whether they or the democracies that prevailed in World War I—particularly the United States and Britain—would establish the norms of the international system that would eventually emerge. In World War II we dealt with Nazi Germany, the successor to the Germanic empires. In the Cold War, we dealt with the Soviet Union, the successor to the tsarist Russian Empire. Now we are grappling with those who followed the Ottomans.

    Extractions: The Hundred Years War The International History Project The Battle of Agincourt An Early History of France The Hundred Years War was an intermittent struggle between England and France in the 14th-15th century over a series of disputes, including the question of the legitimate succession to the French crown. The struggle involved several generations of English and French claimants to the crown and actually occupied a period of more than 100 years. By convention it is said to have started in 1337 and ended in 1453, but there had been periodic fighting over the question of English fiefs in France going back to the 12th century. Medieval legalities were such that one king could be the vassal of another king if the first had inherited titles outside his own kingdom. Such was the case with the English kings since William I, who, as the duke of Normandy, had conquered England in 1066. Marriage alliances and wars had altered the nature of the English titles in France, but, at the death of the French king Charles IV in 1328, Edward III of England was also duke of Guyenne (part of Aquitaine in southwestern France) and count of Ponthieu (on the English Channel). Furthermore, because his mother was Charles IV's sister and because Charles IV had no sons, Edward III considered himself a legitimate claimant to the French throne. The other major claimant was the Count of Valois, a grandson of Philip III of France through a younger branch of the family. A French assembly called to settle the question chose the Valois claimant as Philip VI. Edward III appeared to accept the decision, but when Philip VI, afraid of another king's power in his realm, maneuvered to confiscate Guyenne in 1337, Edward III renewed his claim to the French throne and brought an army to Flanders.

    Extractions: When William the Conqueror became king in 1066, he united England with Normandy in France. Under Henry II , English territory in France increased. The kings of England who succeeded Henry had difficulty holding on to this land and by the time Edward III came to the throne in 1327, England controlled only two areas in France, Gascony in the south, and Ponthieu in the north. In 1328 King Charles IV of France died. Charles did not have any sons to succeed to the throne. His brothers were dead, although he did have a sister, Isabella, the mother of Edward III. Eventually, it was decided that Philip, a cousin of Charles IV, should become king of France. Edward III claimed that because his mother had been the sister of Charles IV, he was the rightful king of France. Edward did not feel he was strong enough to take action straight away but in 1337, with King Philip threatening to take England's territory in France, Edward decided to declare war.
