It is illegal to have native birds and mammals in your possession without the proper permits. Many hours of training go into caring for wildlife. These birds require specialized treatment, care and diets to help ensure a successful release back into the wild. Hummingbirds are the smallest bird species found in the world. They can hover, fly backwards and at times upside-down! Their wings beat up to seventy-eight times per second. They feed from flowers that contain nectar to support their aerial acrobatics and rapid metabolism. In addition, they eat insects to fulfill their need for protein. Hummingbirds must eat often and may die quickly if no food source is available. If you have found a hummingbird, please call Project Wildlife (or another wildlife rehabilitation center in your area) at once. See the resource section COMMON INJURIES/ ILLNESSES FOUND IN HUMMINGBIRDS Window Strikes Across North America, an estimated 100 million to one billion birds die each year after colliding with human-built structures. The reflective and transparent characteristics of glass make windows invisible killers. Birds see a tree reflected in a window or a plant behind it, not the glass. A large percentage of injured hummingbirds seen by Project Wildlife are a result from window strikes. If you witness a hummingbird collide with a window, or find a downed hummingbird close to a window, here’s how you can help:

    Extractions: Hummingbirds are drawn to red, pink, and orange flowers. Some good hummingbird flowers are impatiens, salvia, lilies, trumpet vine, and monarda (bee balm). Although trumpet-shaped flowers are famous for attracting hummingbirds, I have found the diminutive blossoms of coral bells receive more hummer attention than any flower in the garden except columbines. It's best to plant several kinds of flowers, so that something will be in bloom for hummingbirds all the time, whether they are migrating north in spring, spending the summer (if you're lucky), or heading south in the fall. Hummingbirds prefer flowers planted in big same-species clumps, rather than scattered around. And of course you will want to avoid chemicals and sprays. Hummingbird feeders impose a responsibility on the provider. To be safe, they must be clean, and that is a challenge in hot weather. The solution should be changed at least every other day, even if no hummingbirds are using it, so that it doesn't ferment or get moldy. Once a week the feeder must be washed with vinegar and water or a 10% chlorine solution and scrubbed with a baby-bottle brush. (Most experts advise against using soap or detergent.) If all this is too much trouble, just plant the flowers and skip the artificial feeders. You'll still attract hummingbirds, and you won't be harming them with unsanitary feeders.

A few simple tips can improve a homeowner's chances of keeping these tiny birds around all summer. Hummingbirds, those fascinating little green birds that hover like helicopters and occasionally fly backward, usually cross the Mason-Dixon Line shortly after spring flowers bloom. And if your yard is prepared to receive them, ruby-throated hummingbirds may set up shop behind your house and entertain you all summer. Each spring, ruby-throated hummingbirds, the only hummingbirds found east of the Mississippi River, move northward from their winter range in Central and South America. On the way, they fly nonstop across the Gulf of Mexico - at least 500 miles - and zip and dart from one flower garden to the next on their journey to breeding areas throughout the eastern United States and Canada. The birds begin to move into Pennsylvania in late April and early May. As hummingbirds trickle into our state (they don't migrate in groups) some head for familiar haunts while others, especially yearlings, look for backyards they can stake out as their own. Yards, parks or gardens with plenty of edge habitat and spring-blooming flowers tend to have the best chance of attracting these migrants as summertime settlers. A hummingbird feeder will also increase a backyard's appeal.
