In this first part of a 2-part article, we provide a much condensed version of the Huguenot story. In the second part of this article, which will appear in the August newsletter, additional information will be provided on Huguenot research at Clayton Library and a bibliography of the more important Huguenot sources will be published. The term ‘Huguenot’ is used to describe a particular branch of the Protestant religion—aligned with the theology of John Calvin—that arose during the Reformation and flourished in France after 1520. Although certainly religious in nature, the Huguenot movement also had very distinct political components, which put many of its followers in opposition to the French Monarchy. This, coupled with the fact that the Huguenot’s Protestant theological convictions were in direct conflict with the Roman Catholic Church, set the stage for serious confrontations between the Huguenots and the French Church-State. During the reigns of Henry II of France (1547-1559) and Francis II (1559-1560), the Huguenots grew in both number and political influence and came to include many prominent members of the French nobility, including such influential figures as Anthony, King of Navarre. This increase in strength, however, was looked upon as a threat to both the Monarchy and to the Catholic Church and would eventually lead to civil and religious strife that would see many Huguenot families persecuted and driven out of France.

Calvin's reforms were not as radical as those of Zwingli, but they were accompanied by a severe regime that in effect combined church and state in order to enforce moral and doctrinal conformity. Upward of 200 Flemish families settled on land reclaimed by them in the Isle of Axholme; the ships which brought the immigrants up the Humber to their new home being facetiously hailed as "the navy of Tarshish"….In short, wherever the refugees settled, they acted as so many missionaries of skilled work, exhibiting the best practical examples of diligence, industry, and thrift and teaching the English people in the most effective manner the beginnings of those various industrial arts in which they have since acquired so much distinction and wealth."
