Hudson never found such a sea passage, but he sailed farther north than any previous explorer. He explored three North American waterways later named for himthe Hudson River, Hudson Bay, and Hudson Strait. Historians know nothing about Hudson's life except for the period of 1607 to 1611, when he made his four voyages. In 1607, the Muscovy Company, an English trading firm, hired Hudson to find a northern sea route to Asia. European merchants and geographers believed that a ship could reach the Orient by sailing north, northeast, or northwest. They thought such a route would be shorter than any other. The Arctic had not been explored, and people did not know that ice blocked the area around the North Pole. Hudson set out from England in a ship called the Hopewell with his young son, John, and a crew of 10 men. He sailed northeast along the coast of Greenland and reached Spitsbergen. These islands lie only about 700 miles (1,100 kilometers) from the North Pole, and no explorer had sailed so far north before. Huge ice floes forced Hudson to return to England. He told of seeing many whales in the northern waters, and his report led to English and Dutch whaling near Spitsbergen. In 1608, Hudson again tried to find a northern route, but ice again blocked the Hopewell.

Englishman Henry Hudson was looking for a quick passage to China as he sailed along America's north Atlantic coast in 1609. It connects northern Manhattan to the Bronx and was built as part of the Henry Hudson Parkway by the Henry Hudson Parkway Authority. When it opened, it was the longest plate girder arch and fixed arch bridge in the world. Originally built with only one level, the bridge's design allowed for the construction of a second level if traffic demands increased. Within a year and a half the upper level was opened. The upper level carries northbound traffic; the lower one is for southbound traffic. After a series of mergers, the Henry Hudson Parkway Authority became part of the Triborough Bridge Authority in 1941. The failure of this second attempt satisfied the Muscovy Company, which thenceforward directed all its energies to the profitable Spitzbergen trade. Although it is certain that the four great geographical landmarks which to-day serve to keep Hudsons memory alive, namely the Hudson Bay, Strait, Territory and River, had repeatedly been visited and even drawn on maps and charts before he set out on his voyages, yet he deserves to take a very high rank among northern navigators for the mere extent of his discoveries and the success with which he pushed them beyond the limits of his predecessors. The rich fisheries of Spitzbergen and the fur industry of the Hudson Bay Territory were the immediate fruit of his labors.

He explored along the coast of Nova Scotia and down to what is now New York Harbor, sailing up the Hudson River as far north as Albany. He made it as far as Hudson's Bay before mutineers put him and eight others (including his son) adrift on a small boat in the bay in June of 1611. Although no record exists of their fate, the men were already sick and without provisions, and it is assumed Hudson and the others did not survive.

This is the third and final book in the third and final series authored by Asimov of Gareth-Stevens—and there’s good reason to believe that his work on it was minimal and that Elizabeth Kaplan, his ostensible co-author, actually wrote the whole thing. (If that turns out to be the case, this book will end up getting removed from my list.) It’s not bad, really—about as good and as interesting as the earlier books, Christopher Columbus and Ferdinand Magellan . However, not being myself from the East Coast, Hudson is an inherently less interesting explorer than he might be to someone who lives on the river named after him. And unfortunately the book makes him out as being incredibly brave and incredibly stupid, which tends to detract from it. Still, it’s a solid piece of work and I'd gladly hand it to a grade school child who needed to know something about Hudson. John H. Jenkins
