There are also a number of fairly new hotels in the New Territories, providing a range of recreational facilities. Guest-house accommodation, with good standards and facilities, is also available. In spite of the large number of hotel rooms available in Hong Kong (about 40,000), visitors are strongly advised to make an advance booking, especially during the peak season (May until November). There is a Hotel Reservation Centre at Hong Kong International Airport on Chek Lap Kok island (open daily from 0700-2400) which can offer assistance. "There is a meeting this morning between the (former) President and President Jiang Zemin," Clinton's spokesman P. J. Crowley said. He refused to give further details. Crowley also said the former U.S. president would be meeting as a private citizen and declined to comment on what areas the meeting at Jiang's harbor-front hotel might cover. The U.S. consulate in Hong Kong also has said that Clinton was traveling as a private citizen. The men arrived on Tuesday for the Fortune Global Forum, which involves some 700 business leaders, including many from major U.S. corporations. The news showed a local school with kids participating in the special day, but they all looked hot and bothered and ended up complaining that they couldn't concentrate on their work. They decided to spend the whole day making fans to cool down. Problem is how much paper was used to create the fans? Surely this would have a greater effect on the environment. Nice idea though. Got tickets to see this tomorrow on Buddha's birthday. Should be interesting!

Extractions: Barton's Asian Stock Market Charts Glossary 31st May: A short term island reversal suggests further upside in the short term. But there is no clear sign that the index has reversed its several months of decline. Current prediction Short term: none Medium term: none Long term: double bottom (weekly) ponting to 15,000 - doubtful See long term weekly charts with analysis charts current 28th May, except where otherwise indicated The chart below shows a possible island reversal. It is a very nicely formed little pattern with a gap on either side of the island (shown in red circle). However, these patterns are not reliable in Hongkong. I would prefer to see a little reverse head and shoulders pattern develop, as outlined in pink. Volume needs to pick up. Possible new long term reversal pattern. Breakout would be at 14,500. I would prefer to see something with a horizontal neckline. Resistance at 12,000 and 14,000. Target of 15,400 is questionable. But the turn at 11,200 marks a good support. In this instance we have taken local telephone calls (which you may use to call clients or connect to the internet), the cost of the infamous Club Sandwich through room service, and the costs of putting a shirt through the laundry. Some of the results may indeed surprise you. In many Asian countries hotels have began to realise that the business man wants the least amounts of surprises and extra costs as possible. Many hotels in Asia, offer complimentary telephone calls on the executive floor, and other benefits such as free laundry or pressing for a number of items. In Hong Kong strangely, the hotels seem to be very slow to pick up on this and most hotels still charge for local telephone calls even on the executive floor. The Grand Hyatt is a clear winner charging the highest of all the hotel on the Island with HK$ 7 per call ! Our hat goes off to the

William Pomeroy, British Colonialism Exits Hong Kong British colonialism exits hong kong. On July 1 the British Crown Colony of hong kong returns to the rightful sovereignty of China. http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/55/024.html
Extractions: 28 June 1997 After 155 years of foreign occupation, the last imperialist bastion in Asia is being scratched off the map. On July 1 the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong returns to the rightful sovereignty of China. For the Chinese people the British colonial presence in Hong Kong has endured as their longest and most bitter humiliation, because of the way in which it came about. It was torn away from China through what is known as the Opium War of 1839-1842, a British war of aggression conducted when Chinese authorities of the time sought to impede the importation of huge quantities of opium from India by British trading companies, which deliberately used the drug to render millions of Chinese people as addicts, employing it as an instrument of commercial penetration, one of the most despicable imperialist acts on record. The Opium War forced the ceding to Britain in 1842 of the island of Hong Kong and adjacent small islands at the mouth of the Pearl River on China's southeastern coast. Subsequently sections of the mainland itself, Kowloon in 1869 and the New Territories in 1898, were added to the colony, which was developed as the main British base in the imperialist scramble for the China market. The last addition was acquired through a 99-year lease and it is the expiration of that lease this year which has led to the negotiated return of Hong Kong to China.
