Extractions: During the 2000-01 school year, Williams Intermediate School in Davenport, Iowa, improved use of its library dramatically. From one month to the next, circulation of library books and other materials doubled, sometimes even tripled. A survey of students found that there was a 3 percent increase in the number of students who indicated reading frequently rather than sometimes or never. What difference did these changes make? Of tested 6th graders, 18 percent moved from needing improvement to meeting or exceeding reading standards. Test score improvements for Black and Hispanic students were even higher than for the general student population. The big question is: how do improvements in school libraries contribute to such student progress? In recent years, I have led several studies of the impact of school libraries and librarians on student performance, working with my colleagues Marcia Rodney and Christine Hamilton-Pennell. To date, we have completed such studies in six states: Alaska, Pennsylvania, and Colorado in 2000; Oregon and Iowa in 2001; and New Mexico just recently

THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC Summarizing demographic characteristics and achievement results for 20,760 home school students, the largest study of home schooling conducted to date (Rudner,1999a) was released in Spring 1999 with a great deal of press coverage. This Digest highlights some of the findings, identifies limitations of the study, and presents several conclusions. In Spring 1998, 39,607 home school students contracted to take the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS; grades K-8) or the Tests of Achievement and Proficiency (TAP; grades 9-12) through Bob Jones University Press Testing and Evaluation Service. Students were given an achievement test and their parents were asked to complete a questionnaire entitled "Voluntary Home School Demographic Survey."A total of 20,760 students in 11,930 families provided useable questionnaires with corresponding achievement tests. The achievement test and questionnaire results were combined to form the dataset used in the study.

They conduct research, collect and analyze data, monitor economic trends, and develop forecasts. They research issues such as energy costs, inflation, interest rates, exchange rates, business cycles, taxes, or employment levels. Economists devise methods and procedures for obtaining the data they need. For example, sampling techniques may be used to conduct a survey, and various mathematical modeling techniques may be used to develop forecasts. Preparing reports, including tables and charts, on research results is an important part of an economists job. Presenting economic and statistical concepts in a clear and meaningful way is particularly important for economists whose research is directed toward making policies for an organization. Some economists might also provide economic analysis to the media.
