Extractions: InPhase will demonstrate a holographic storage system at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show in Las Vegas from April 8-10. The system, called "Tapestry," is said to represent "... the first stable holographic data storage media." The first generation of write-once holographic storage will hold 100 GB of data, with future generations expected to scale into the terabyte region. 100 GB is enough to hold 30 minutes of uncompressed high definition video, or 20 compressed feature films of the standard found on current DVDs. The system is said to enable "extremely fast transfer rates," but there are some unanswered questions. The media is said to have a

Extractions: The design combines current research into optical holographic data storage with data-encoding algorithms evolving from our research on software data compression, to increase data-storing capacity. There is no theoretcal limit to the redundant use of physical storage media by the this design; however published research on optical holography for data storage suggests a capacity increase on the order of hundreds to thousands over existing technology. HIERARCHICALLY MULTIPLEXED OPTICAL RECORDING SYSTEM FOR STORAGE OF DIGITAL DATA Summary of Principle U.S. Patent Nos. 4,958,338, 5,038,335 PRIOR ART: To date, digital data storage has relied almost exclusively on binary numeric representation. Though simple and efficient, this method represents the least effective use of each unit of physical storage, since a binary digit is the absolute minimum quantity of information. Technical advances which have increased storage capacity have been limited to discovering means to pack more binary units into a given amount of storage media, a strictly linear increase. Recently, interest has been growing in digital storage based upon optical holograms. These systems commonly use a two-dimensional matrix of binary cells (a "page") as the base image. These pages are then multiplexed by varying one of the recording signals along a dimensionalized property like wavelength or angle of incidence.

In particular, the author's mission was to sustain the thesis that holography may in fact be, one day, the technology that dominates the way we use, store and access information. To meet this goal the author researched professional literature, visited companies, and academic institutions, performed interviews and then synthesized his findings by identifying underlying themes. Extractions: Hello Dynamism! I found Dynamism.com in my search for the best way to record my life... you see, I am trying to strap something to myself that will record (and even transmit) good quality audio and video of everything I experience. Ideally, the battery would last all day. Looking for components to help me do this, I am finding that the US-marketed products fall short compared to what is available in Japan. I am leaning toward a super compact laptop for its storage, connectivity and multimedia compatibility (versus an iPod-like device), perhaps using a USB webcam and mics, or perhaps just starting with audio-only and still photos from a bluetooth camera phone. Actually I'd like to test all these configurations. You probably have some ideas off the top of your head about what might work well. At the same time, I am looking for new career, so my resume is below and attached (.txt). I would like to run a free website where I document and test various devices rigged up for the above purpose. I am experienced in digital multimedia technology, running websites and building online communities... and I have several connections that will help.
Extractions: said by PeteC2 Well, vkr and I went around on something closely related to this before...and although I do believe that magnetic-media drives will eventually be replaced...I do have to agree that the current "state of the art" has traditional magnetic/mechanical drives continuing to dominate the all important "bang for the buck" category. Well, I bought my first computer in 1985 (does that make me an old fart, or what , but I was very young!!) and the major storage technologies at that time were: RAM (SRAM, DRAM), ROM, and magnetic (tape, HD). What do we have today? Mostly the same things. The only major additions are CD/DVD, with flash/NVRAM/EEPROM being the minor additions since they evolved from RAM and ROM. Well known technologies that became obsolete were core memory and paper (punch cards!); examples of lesser known technologies that never saw the light of day or were very short lived are "magnetic bubble memory" and FMD, and there were those "also runs" like Bernoulli or MO that did make it to the marketplace, but either died out like the dinos, or relegated to niche markets. Lastly, it was in the late 70's that I've first heard of holographic storage, but as far as I know, it's still a pipedream.

Compact discs revolutionized data storage in the early 1980s, allowing multi-megabytes of data to be stored on a disc that has a diameter of a mere 12 centimeters and a thickness of about 1.2 millimeters. In 1997, an improved version of the CD, called a digital versatile disc (DVD), was released, which enabled the storage of full-length movies on a single disc.

Racing to fit more memory into everything from laptops to PDAs to MP3 players to digital cameras, vendors are squeezing ever-larger capacity into ever-smaller packages. Several new products continue to up the ante, but an overabundance of standards threatens mass confusion. Tight-on-space notebook users can get a boost from Toshiba's new MK2001MPL Plug-n-Play PC Card hard drive. The 4200-rpm drive holds 2GB of data, and even greater capacities are in the wings. If you want a small external drive, check Flotec's new 5-by-3-by-0.5-inch Pockey. Connecting via USB, the Pockey installs like a charm. Our test Pockey seemed sturdy, but all hard drives should be handled with care. LaCie markets the PocketDrive, a similar but pricier product with both USB and fast FireWire connectivity, in 10GB to 30GB models.
