What's New Plano West stripped of hockey title 08:49 PM CDT on Thursday, May 6, 2004 By PAUL J. WEBER / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News The Plano West hockey team was stripped of its state championship Thursday after an investigation concluded that two academically ineligible players participated in last month's state tournament. The Texas Amateur Hockey Association ruled that because Plano West failed to produce evidence that the two players were passing their classes, it had little choice but to revoke the state title the team won, 2-1, in overtime April 18 against Houston Clear Lake. "If they could have given us some documentation that the players were eligible, we would have blessed their championship and been done with it," said TAHA high school section president Bill Justice, who handled the two-week investigation. "We asked for verification repeatedly but never received anything." Gary Sobolewski, former president of the Plano West hockey club, said he was confused by the ruling and maintained that, to his knowledge, Plano West skated only eligible players. Michael VanHuss, who replaced Sobolewski as president for next season, said the club would wait until it addressed questions to TAHA before deciding whether it will appeal.

I know Ive said it before but I still find it disheartening that someone whom Ill always consider a Brave and a certainty for the Hall of Fame, has to go through all these shenanigans, which I feel are mostly attributable to his agent, Scott Boras. Check this out: Greg Maddux told the Las Vegas Sun that four teams are interested in him, but that he doesn't intend to make a decision on where to pitch in 2004 until February 16 at the earliest. "My intention is to play where I want to play and to play for a contract that's respectable," Maddux said. "I'm not out to make anyone look bad or milk 'em for that extra dime." The teams wooing the free agent pitcher are the Cubs, Dodgers, Cardinals, and Orioles.
