Given all these factors, its not surprising that some athletes simply burn out on their sport. But what is shocking to many in the field are the young ages at which this is increasingly happening sometimes as early as 9 or 10. The scenario often goes something like this: Eager to nurture the next A-Rod or Michelle Kwan, parents enroll their 5- or 6-year-olds in a competitive sports league or program. Over the next few years, training intensifies and expands to the off-season, making practice essentially year-round. Youngsters may join more than one league or a traveling team. They may have to sacrifice other interests and give up most of the down time that allows them to just be kids.

Extractions: Tall, with sandy brown hair, blue eyes and an ingenious smile, Dean McDermott can easily assume the role of a romantic lead, such as Garnett, a farmhand whom a young woman falls in love with, despite protests from her mother, in the telefilm Lives of Girls and Women . His intriguing performance earned him a Gemini nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Yet it has been his performance in Due South as Constable Renfield the by-the-book Constable Fraser look positively at ease, that has endeared him to a growing number of television viewers. The Canadian native got his start in show business when, around age 19, he decided to stop procrastinating and went and got himself an agent. A variety of commercials and guest appearances in various TV shows and movies ensued, and soon he found his way onto one of Canada's most popular TV series, Due South Dean's first appearance on this series was in the first season episode " The Man Who Knew Too Little ," in which the path of pathological liar Ian MacDonald crosses disastrously with that of Fraser and Ray. Dean portrayed Laurier, one of the Canadian mobsters chasing Ian. Creator Paul Haggis was so impressed with Dean that when he created the character of Turnbull, a Mountie who was even "straighter-arrow than Fraser," Dean seemed the natural choice. When Haggis left the series to pursue new opportunities, he suggested to the new producers that Turnbull become a semi-regular.

Extractions: (JUNE-2000) Hockey action never stops ... not even on off-days between Stanley Cup Finals. Hockey players of a different sort are traveling to the Stanley Cup to compete for a championship hockey trophy of their own and a chance to play against the "Great One," Wayne Gretzky. Thirty-two, two-person teams from across the country will compete in the 2nd annual Bud Light Bubble Boys National Championship (team bios and contact information available upon request). Once the National Champions are crowned, they will then face off in a charity exhibition game against Bubble Boys Hockey League (BBHL) Commissioner Wayne Gretzky and NHL referee Paul Stewart. For each goal scored during the charity exhibition game, Bud Light will make a donation to Hockey Fights Cancer. Hockey Fights Cancer is a joint charitable initiative founded in December 1998 by the National Hockey League and National Hockey League Players' Association in honor of those in the hockey community who have struggled or continue to struggle with the disease. The Bud Light Bubble Boys National Championship and charity exhibition featuring Gretzky and Stewart will be held between Stanley Cup games 3 and 4 (Sunday, June 4) at the Wyndam Anatole hotel in Dallas.

Extractions: Slap Shot (25th Anniversary Edition) Now Available Universal Universal.com Ken Tuccio Movie Synposis: Paul Newman plays minor league player/coach Reggie Dunlop in this classic story of what hockey "used to be like". Trying to build up attendance at Chiefs games, he brings in the Hanson Brothers and then begins beating the heck out of the opposition. Unexpectedly, the Chiefs start to win and make a run to the playoffs. Soon, scouts are watching the Chiefs and it all ends up with a classic final playoff game. Due to the incredible popularity of the Hanson characters in the movie, they have become for lack of a better term, folk heroes. However, this is one of the features I will probably not use that often. There's an expression, a little goes a long way. Well, that's the case here. Another expression that you can use is "well, it seemed like a good idea at the time". In addition to the commentary itself being annoying, getting to this was a bit tough. With most special features you access it right through the menu- here you had to have the entire movie reload again. They should take their own advice and listen to the FN song.

Wayne Gretzky is all business. The greatest player who ever laced up a pair of skates is facing what could be the greatest challenge of his hockey career, and that's putting together the team to win Canada's first Olympic gold medal since 1952. As executive director of Team Canada, Gretzky knows the weight of a hockey-mad nation is on his shoulders. Gretzky knows better than anyone that the only color that counts in Canada is gold silver and bronze might as well be tin and he understands as well as anyone that any of the so-called six top hockey powers can mine gold in Salt Lake City in February. One of the lasting memories from the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, is of Gretzky sitting alone on the bench after the Czech Republic beat Canada in the quarter-finals in a shootout. Gretzky knew his one chance to win Olympic gold as a player was over and now he's been asked to assemble a gold-medal winning team.

Extractions: Used price: Average review score: Excellent for beginners learning the basics of ice hockey. My team, the San Francisco Earthquakes, has several beginner players. Most of them had been to beginner hockey classes, but they still didn't know many of the basics. I set out to find a book that would provide these basic lessons and answer many of the new players' questions. I looked at several books, but this one had the best fit. It is written for beginners, but will also serve experienced players who need to review the basics. What to do, where to be, how to shoot, when to pass? These questions and many more are all answered clearly and simply. This is a book for beginners. Intermediate and advanced players may be looking for more insight than this book provides. My teammates now know what to do most of the time. If they'd only skate a little harder... A Great Book to Learn From A comprehensive guide for new players I've bought about 7 or 8 books on various aspects of hockey over the past few weeks, and each has taught me something, but I really needed one that could tell me *how the game is played* where I'm supposed to be and what I'm supposed to be doing in different situations. This book did just that by explaining the basics of offense and defense with both text and easy-to-follow diagrams. I have a good overall sense of the game now, as well as specific admonishments to keep in mind (like not to chase a puck carrier behind the goal, and not to follow crisscrossing forwards when backchecking). I plan to read this book again in a month (after I've played a few games on an organized team), and I fully expect to absorb even more.
