Extractions: Jonathan Ogden , football player. Noam S.: Should the policy of discontinuing smaller college sports programs (like volleyball) in order to have equitable funds for women's teams be illegal? Bonnie St. John Deane Bonnie St. John Deane: I am not familiar with the entire situation you are describing. However, rather than fighting against a specific action it might be better to push for a better understanding of what "equitable funds for women's teams" means. If the current policy on "equitable funds for women's teams" allows practices which are damaging to women's sports overall, then the basic definitions are flawed. Cammi Granato: No, I don't believe that the policy should be illegal. In an ideal world, colleges and universities would have sufficient budgets to provide opportunities for all students (male or female) to participate in the sports of their choice. However, most universities don't have sufficient budgets to support the number of athletic programs that this would require. If we didn't have this policy in place, most women's programs would not be given an opportunity because the smaller men's programs would have an established history and tradition within the institution that would prevail over the desire to start a new program. Women need this policy in order to have an opportunity to develop the same kind of tradition and history that many men's programs already enjoy.

Extractions: Be A Player Trading Cards News Yeah, I know. Some people call these the dog days of summer. The baseball pennant races are heating up. The NFL season is underway. Hockey players are trying to get a last few rounds of golf in before they start formally preparing for the season. But for the card manufacturers, hockey season is already in full swing. Here at In the Game, that point was driven home with the release of our first hockey card product for 2001-02, the Be A Player Memorabilia Series. Sure, it may be a little early for those of you who prefer not to think about hockey until the season starts and the weather cools down. But there are plenty of you out there who can't get enough, no matter what time of year. If you fall in that category, may I whole-heartedly recommend our new Memorabilia Series to you. Some of you may think it's relatively easy for a company employee to extol the virtues of his own products. Sure, it would be difficult to prove I am completely unbiased these days when it comes to hockey cards. I remain, however, a lifelong collector. I also like to think that my 10-plus years of experience as a hobby journalist helps maintain a degree of objectivity. So bear with me here while I attempt to convince you in layman's terms why I think Be A Player Memorabilia is such an impressive brand of hockey cards. The first thing I like is the design of the base set. The photography is very nice, the colours are vivid, and the layout is sharp. I like it better than last year's Memorabilia base card design. Based on input we received from collectors who have seen this year's version, many of you agree with that assessment.

Even here at the "Be the Best You Are clinics McMahon, who first appeared in 1982, has put together the most successful staff clinics weve ever had, including last year when he had the USA Baseball staff clinic. This year he will once again provide insights into how a total program is put together with the help of two of his assistants at Florida where he took over in 2002 and led the team to the NCAA tournament. He arrived there after serving four years as the head baseball coach at Mississippi State where he led the Bulldogs to a College World Series appearance in 1998, two consecutive NCAA Super Regional berths (2000 and 2001), four straight NCAA Regional berths and compiled a 164-88 overall record. In nine years as a head coach at both Mississippi State (1998-2001) and Old Dominion (1990-94), he has amassed a 353-174 record and .670 winning percentage. Extractions: Customer Reviews I'm not the biggest Fischler fan out there (he tends to write in empty platitudes), but this book is definitely worth checking out. Some of his rankings are kooky (Bucyk over Espo, Neely not in the top 20, saying that Tiny Thompson was the best goalie in Bruins history aside from Frankie Brimsek even though he rated both Gerry Cheevers and Ed Johnston ahead of Thompson), but that would be the case with any such list. It's a great generator for discussion, and the bios for each listed person have some neat anecdotes. There are no new revelations about Ray Bourque or Bobby Orr, but there's good information about some of the old timers like Bill Cowley, Cooney Weiland, and Frank Frederickson. If you're a fan of the Bruins, this is essential. If you're a fan of hockey history, it's also worth picking up. Stan Fischler is a dedicated hockey enthusiasts who's Boston Bruins: Greatest Moments And Players is a wonderfully written survey providing unique insights into one of professional hockey's most legendary franchises. Fischler covers the Boston Bruins' 75-year history through informative profiles and anecdotal stories of success and talent that went into the making of one of hockey's greatest teams. Boston Bruins is "must" reading for all hockey enthusiasts in general, and every Bruins fan in particular!

She walks a couple of feet off the ground. Ms. Newborn is not only a survivor, but a person who has happiness to share with others. Her book offers incredible insight to those who have either experienced a stroke or know someone who has. She gave me a clear understanding of aphasia and how strokes effect people. A must read for stroke survivors! I read quite a few books about strokes following my own, but only wanted to own two. This book, which was a gift from a dear friend, provided such inspiration during my recovery. I still read it from time to time because it continues to be a touchstone for me. I've always loved the poem "Ithaca" which is referenced in the title but it's taken on a special meaning since reading this book. Thank you for writing it, Barbara. Excellent for stroke survivors under 50.

Extractions: 11:39 PM CDT on Sunday, May 9, 2004 By JEFF MILLER and MIKE HEIKA / The Dallas Morning News Debate about the role of violent play in hockey is older than the NHL itself. It resurfaced this year after a fist-fest between Philadelphia and Ottawa on March 5 resulted in an NHL-record 419 penalty minutes. It intensified after Vancouver star Todd Bertuzzi attacked Colorado rookie Steve Moore on March 8. The criticism usually fades with time. Fans have consistently delivered a message that they like fighting and hard hitting. But the debate over safety in the sport has continued in Canada even during the playoffs, when fights are usually mothballed because each victory is so important.
