Conclusion Most people may not like the idea of studying mathematics and physics, because they feel that it is boring and hard to understand. They do not see how these subjects are related to their lives. Actually, people do not realize how often they use mathematics and physics everyday without even thinking about it. One way that these subjects may become more interesting is learning more about people who have helped to develop the equations and formulas that are used. When science was first being studied, the relationship between mathematics and physics was very close. It was impossible to separate these two subjects. Even today it is important to support scientific development. Students should understand the connection between mathematics and physics. In order to understand these subjects students must know about the people who made contributions to them. You are members of a group of researchers who are studying the history of contributions to BOTH mathematics and physics. Each group will consist of five students. Each student in the group should research two different people from this list. After researching the people in the list go back to your group to discuss your findings. Then, choose five of them and describe the specific contribution that each person made to both mathematics and physics. Finally, you will be making a presentation to your classmates on your findings.

It is intended to be especially helpful to first time teachers of such courses. The proximate reason for creating this page is the following minicourse at the annual MAA meeting in Baltimore: Minicourse #14 Teaching a Course in the History of Mathematics , organized by V. Frederick Rickey , U. S. Military Academy, and Victor J. Katz , University of the District of Columbia; Part A: Wednesday, Januray 15, 2003, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Part B: Friday, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Many schools are introducing courses in the history of mathematics and asking faculty who may never have taken such a course to teach them. This minicourse will assist those teaching history by introducing participants to numerous resources, discussing differing approaches and sample syllabi, providing suggestions for student projects and assessments, and giving those teaching such courses for the first time the confidence to master the subject themselves and to present the material to their students. Cost is $60; enrollment limit is 50. A packet of material was distributed to participants at the minicourse. There is a lot more information on these pages and some of them have been modified and so will not agree precisely with what was distributed.

    Extractions: This is the home page for my collection of materials for using original sources in a history of mathematics class. I have used (most of) these materials in class and have had success with them. Much of what students learn in history of mathematics courses and mathematics courses in general is a modernized version of these sources. One can easily say "Fermat and Descartes invented analytic geometry", but it is difficult to recognize modern analytic geometry in the writings of Fermat and Descartes ( especially Descartes). Getting from the source to the modern version can provide insight into the past and the present. For prospective secondary mathematics educators, this can also provide insight into the teaching of certain topics. This is in the spirit of Abel's often quoted "It appears to me that if one wants to make progress in mathematics, one should study the masters and not the pupils". This site contains a reading list and a collection of discussion questions and homework problems. I hope you find something that will be useful.     Extractions: Search MAA Online MAA Home When I first saw in FOCUS a description of the proposed Institute in the History of Mathematics and Its Use in Teaching, I thought it was an ideal opportunity for someone like me. I had taught a history of mathematics course several times, yet had no formal training in the subject. I had read quite a lot in the field and attended a few history of mathematics conferences, but I still felt there were holes in my background. Further, I would benefit from hearing of the experiences of others with courses like the one I teach. The Institute (funded by the NSF and run under MAA supervision) exceeded my expectations. It consisted of two three-week sessions a year apart. Both sessions were set up and run by Victor Katz, Fred Rickey, and Steven Schot, who presented material and led discussion sessions. In addition, each year we had several guest lecturers who were for the most part excellent: Ronald Calinger, Judy Grabiner, Helena Pycior, David Pengelley, Ubi D'Ambrosio, Karen Parshall, Uta Merzbach, Judy Green, and James Donaldson. A second thrust of the Institute was to get participants to read carefully and discuss original sources in mathematics. Thus we examined selected writings of Euler, Archimedes, Leibniz and Gauss, to mention just a few. This reading of the original great works taught us of the importance of looking at sources to see just what was (and was not) said and how it was presented.
