It has been traced back at least 5000 years, and its effectiveness has withstood the test of time. The inventor and painter Leonardo de Vince (1452-1519) sketched ideas for a mechanical adding machine. A century and a half later the french philosopher and mathematician Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) finally invented and built the first mechanical adding machine. It was called the Pascaline and used gear-driven counting wheels to do addition.

Ten years later most computers come standard with a 100GB hard drive and some games can consume more than 200GB of space. RAM (random access memory): This is the area of the computer where information is temporarily stored for further processing or printing. It's kind of like the work area where you spread out the files and documents you are working on at the time. If you don't save your work to the hard drive it will be lost when you turn the computer off. Each program takes up a certain amount of memory to process and do calculations. The more memory you have the more things you can do. Ten years ago DOS programs could operate easily with 1 or 2MB of RAM. Windows 3.1 programs need a minimum of 4MB of ram. Windows 95 realistically needs a minimum of 32MB. Windows 98 needs 64MB. Windows XP needs 128MB. It is always best to have more memory than the minimum requirement.

Kathleen Kiefer (of Colorado State University) and Cynthia L. Selfe jointly edited the newsletter. Computers and Composition reflected (and perhaps pushed?) the growth. . They have collaboratively edited the journal since then. The 1994 printing of Volume 11, Number 1 of Computers and Composition marked another major change. With this change, the management of subscriptions and the actual printing of the journal shifted from Michigan Technological University to Stamford, Connecticut. As staff of an international journal, Assistant Editors now found they had to work with authors from many other countries, requiring an ability to acknowledge the cultural and stylistic differences while maintaining the journal's APA-based format.
