On Saturday, the 16th annual Festival of India was held at Stevens Point Area Senior High School (SPASH.) The event was set to occur near Oct. 2 in honor of Mahatma Gandhi's birthday. Ron Strege, Director of Multicultural Affairs and speaker at the event says that the purpose of the Festival is two-fold. He believes that Stevens Point is very fortunate to have the Chanders holding the festival here as "there is so much to learn about the different kind of people around us. It is important to gain a better knowledge of as many cultures as possible so that you understand why people have the perspectives that they do and make the decisions that they do based on their backgrounds." Strege, who is also a member of the SHAMA board, says that alongside education, the festival is designed to raise money for SHAMA's charitable projects for India. Primary among these is the creation of scholarships for women in India, who without an education are forced to turn to lives of prostitution. Funds also support the school they attend, and promote reproductive health. The event also has resources for attendants to sponsor an Indian child or village.

The group was conceived of and organized by Jim H. . Jim was a recovering alcoholic, with twelve years of sobriety at that time. He had found mountaineering to be a healthy and satisfying passion which he felt was important to his own recovery, and began to envision how he could weave his mountaineering interest into a way of fulfilling the twelfth step in the Alcoholics Anonymous regimen. In 1990 Jim began to formulate the idea of holding an AA meeting on the summit of Mount Rainier in conjunction with the national AA convertion which was held in Seattle that year. The amount of planning and training required conspired to prevent this dream from being realized. The following year, however, Jim brought together a small group of experienced mountaineers with a larger group of people interested in learning about mountain climbing. What these people had in common was a self-acknowledged alcohol dependency and a desire to stop drinking. Some had been sober for years, others for just weeks, but they all sought the mutual support and individual learning provided by AA.

The periods of time following the Middle Ages are known as the Renaissance and the Reformation, and these periods stand out as a time of cultural change with respect to the Church. The Renaissance saw the re-introduction of Greek and Roman thought in intellectual circles, and as a result the Church had to compete with the philosophies, literature, and the paganism of ancient Greece and Rome. The Reformation was an effort to reform the Church itself and return it to the ways of the original Christians. The Renaissance was an intellectual re-awakening, while the Reformation was a religious re-awakening. In both cases the authority of the Catholic Church was diminished, and this change had a significant impact on how Western civilization viewed the body. Different theories of how one should view the human body were developed during the Renaissance and the Reformation, and as a consequence the groundwork was laid for different attitudes toward sport and physical education. The Renaissance was heavily influenced by the classics, especially the philosophies of Aristotle and Plato, and these arguments were adopted by the humanists.

My research focus is the role of staff, patient and volunteer labour in shaping the organisation of large Lancashire mental institutions between 1918 and 1948. The research is pursued from a social history - not medical - perspective. Belfast History Within this a number of other projects have developed or are at the embryonic stage. The development of a British and Irish Labour and social history class, spearheaded by the TGWU Irish region is due to begin in the summer, also the debate is taking place around the establishment of a peoples centre for history, possibly in what is currently the HQ of the TGWU in Belfast. The idea is to democratise history in a way which has never been done in the North before, and it is history, or the lack of understanding of it, that hangs over this country like a shroud. Projects like the ones we have mentioned, would have been impossible 5 years ago, not only impossible, but also dangerous. We are creating a space to allow the past to be reconstructed in a way which is popular and accessible, public history in its best tradition. We welcome any comments on our plans and activites.
