Extractions: Purpose Description Significance ... Equipment Purpose Use of CD-ROM and Web materials will also help students to learn how to assess the value of images. In spite of lifelong viewing of television and movies, undergraduates are very selective in their ability to understand what they see in images. The well-known passiveness of habitual TV and movie viewers blocks learning. I will surely continue to use textbook illustrations, slides, transparencies, and videos to challenge students to be active viewers, but the accessibility of multitudinous CD-ROM and Web images makes it possible to pick from a far greater variety of visual sources than before to illustrate points as needed in response to discussion topics or to students' questions. As in several other disciplines, maps are of vital importance to historians. But maps of any size have become far too expensive to buy and transparency maps are much too small to use in a large class. However, CD-ROMs such as "The Great American History Machine" provide not only maps but interactive features that facilitate comparative study of agricultural development, migration, voting patterns, and other long-term and large-scale phenomena that many beginning students find hard to follow. And there are many geographical CD-ROMs as well as Web sites that contain useful maps that can be projected on large screens. The more such resourcesand the more data projectorsthat become available for classroom use, the greater is the chance that history instructors will be able to introduce their beginning students to the way history is understood and written.

TEACH: Native Peoples Of The Great Lakes Region Graphics Map of Great Lakes tribes, Britannica; Chippewa camp (c.1875), Minnesota historical Society http://www.great-lakes.net/teach/history/native/native_1.html
Extractions: Indians, or Native Peoples, were the original inhabitants of North America and the Great Lakes region. In fact, Native Peoples inhabited the continent tens of thousands of years before the arrival of settlers from Europe and the Far East. By the 16th century, the Native Peoples of North America had evolved into widely different cultures. Notable tribes around the Great Lakes included people we now call the Chippewa, Fox, Huron, Iroquois, Ottawa, Potawatomi and Sioux. Click for larger map! Approximately 120 bands of Native Peoples have occupied the Great Lakes basin over the course of history. In the United States, Native Peoples are also referred to as American Indians or Native Americans. In Canada, tribes are called First Nations. In the Ontario region alone, more than 75 bands of First Nations are reported. A band is based on kinship and family affiliation. A nuclear family is part of a clan (cousins), a clan is part of a band (aunts, uncles, extended cousins), and a collection of bands make up a tribe. Tribes are traditionally highly organized, politically autonomous groups.

( http://www.epsaweb.org/images/1648.gif ) At the beginning of the Roman Empire, even the Romans referred to the area where Israel is now as JUDEA!!! ( http://www.epsaweb.org/images/0260.gif ) That map was drawn before they decided to eradicate all trace of the Jews and deliberately called it "Palestine" as an insult to the Jews. (There is no mention of "Palestinian Arabs" as a separate people in any history books written prior to the 1970's either!!!) The history of "Palestine", even as a modern political entity, and not just an amorphous area on the western edge of the Ottoman Empire, doesn't date back before WWI. That was when the entire Ottoman empire was divided up (and almost all of the present Arab countries were formed!) and the British were given the Palestine Mandate WITH THE EXPRESS CONDITION TO FORM A JEWISH HOMELAND THERE!!! Here are some of the actual words from the Mandate ( http://www.us-israel.org/jsource/History/Palestine_Mandate.html
