Extractions: Publications Links New Search ... Site Tools Drinking alcohol is one of the accepted practices of adulthood. It is legal for adults to have wine with dinner, beer at the end of a long week, or cocktails at a dinner party. But drinking to the point of losing control sends the wrong message to children, as does reaching for a drink to remedy unhappiness or tension. Although it is legal for adults to smoke cigarettes, the negative impact tobacco has on a smoker's health is well documented. If a child asks his parents why they smoke, they may explain that when they began, people didn't understand how unhealthy smoking is and that once a smoker starts, it's very hard to stop. Young people can avoid making the same mistake their parents did by never starting and risking addiction. The fact is, if you use alcohol, tobacco products, or illicit drugs, your children are more likely to use them too. However, even if you use these substances, you can do a lot to make sure that your children don't. If you use alcohol, drink moderately and refrain from always drinking for celebrations and holidays. Learn other ways to celebrate. Try to deal with stress without tossing down a few drinks. Try exercise, talking with a friend, or deep breathing, for instance. Allow yourself a "time out" from your regular routine. The children you care for will learn a lot by imitating these coping strategies.

And the naïvete of those who honestly believe the garbage the cartel spews out is equally unimaginable. Here is an article published by "On Health," a well-known lackey of the anti-tobacco industry. On Health regularly publishes garbage on tobacco, its users, and publicizes the junk science steadily mass-produced by the cartel. This particular article, however, requires some comments, because seldom I have seen something more stupid, as well as more false and misleading, all under one roof. The Rehooked Generation: How Do We Help Them Stop? Alarmed to discover a large, new generation of smokers gathering in the nation's secondary schools and colleges, public health officials are facing a question they've never seriously confronted before: How do you get an addicted child to stop smoking? ...Notice the resounding title: "The Re-Hooked Generation..." Extractions: The Healthy Schools Programme is a key part of the Government's drive to improve standards of health and education and to tackle health inequalities. Its aim is to make children, teachers, parents and communities more aware of the opportunities that exist in schools for improving health. The Government signaled its intention to help all schools become healthy schools in the White Paper, 'Excellence in Schools', produced by the Department for Education and Skills (DFES) in 1997. The Healthy Schools Programme was announced in the Department of Health's (DH) Green Paper 'Our Healthier Nation', and launched on 14th May 1998 by Ministers Tessa Jowell (Public Health) and Estelle Morris (School Standards). The National Healthy School Standard (formerly known as the National Healthy Schools Scheme) was proposed in the Green Paper 'Our Healthier Nation' in 1998. In this paper, the government identified the school as a setting to improve the health of children. In the government's view, a healthy school is in a key position to improve children's health and educational achievement, with the support of other agencies.

[Bibliography] Whereas the prevalence of tobacco use has declined in the general Canadian population in the last decade, the trends among the Native population are alarming . Apart from having much higher consumption rates for both smoke and smokeless tobacco, Native people also tend to start smoking earlier than non-Natives. In addition, there seems to be a certain lack of concern or awareness concerning the serious tobacco-related risks to the present and future health of many Native communities. Given the current levels of tobacco use among Native people, any effective reduction strategy will have to include at least three components, namely Protection, Prevention and Cessation. Since Environmental Tobacco Smoke (E.T.S.) is a serious health hazard to which non-smokers as well as smokers are continuously exposed, the first step is to ensure that the community has as many

School policies, promoting good health and a non-discriminatory, safe and secure physical and psychosocial environment, are most effective when supported by other reinforcing strategies such as provision of safe water and sanitation, skills based health education, provision of health and other services, effective referral to external health service providers and links with the community. The FRESH framework provides this context by positioning health related school policies among its four core components, that should be made available together for all schools: Health related school policies Safe water and sanitation Skills based health education A ccess to health and nutrition services These core components of the FRESH framework require school-community partnerships as the supporting strategies for the success of school health and nutrition programs.

Extractions: Marijuana And Multiple Sclerosis - New Study In findings that contradict earlier research, a team of scientists reports that marijuana does not improve the often painful symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS). Their small study found that a synthetic form of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active ingredient in marijuana, and a plant extract were no better at relieving severe spasticity or muscle contraction compared with an inactive placebo. Patients muscle tone improved while taking marijuana but their self-reported ratings on a scale measuring their overall disability declined. A previous study in mice indicated that marijuana might help to relieve these painful spasms. However, the amount of the drug used in mice would not be tolerated in humans, the researchers explain. While their study included just 16 patients, it is the largest randomized, controlled clinical trial to investigate the use of marijuana to treat MS.

Extractions: One year ago I wrote that "it has been a year of continuing change nationally and there has been a major drive within the College to contribute positively " The same could be said this year, but even more so. Another major proposal was the need to strengthen regional activities. We have opened a further office in Wales, jointly with the RCS, and three more will follow this coming year. They have proved universally popular and I suspect that despite the cost there will be offices in each Deanery eventually. We have also increased the number of Regional "Teach ins" both for SHO's and for Consultants, forming a significant component of CME for the latter. There is also now a handbook containing the job descriptions of all College Officers (except myself) both in Regents Park and in the regions. This should help clarify some of the confusion that exists regarding the interface between the College and the Deaneries. In the wake of Bristol, where I gave evidence, there has been continued pressure on self-regulation. Clinical governance is being introduced. The College has worked closely with other Colleges through the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges to produce a generic model. This will involve annual appraisal by the Trust, participation in audit and CPD with a personal portfolio. Revalidation was agreed by the GMC in February and a wide range of working groups have been looking at options. Our Standards Committee (created in the College reorganisation) has made major contributions in both these areas. Revalidation will be introduced in 2001, but we are making the point

Extractions: Women's and Perinatal Health Tobacco Use Cessation and Youth Issue Brief, August 1999 Why Tobacco Cessation For Youth? In spite of this increased attention on tobacco and the prevention of its use among young people, little concern has been given to youth who already smoke, with some exceptions that will be described later in this paper. In the fight against tobacco use and addiction, prevention is the top priority and the key to promoting healthy lifestyles. However, even with successful health education efforts, which have resulted in significant progress towards preventing children and adolescents from ever using tobacco, more than 3,000 young people still become regular smokers each day and approximately six million are current smokers (1). Tobacco Use Among Youth Tobacco use is the leading cause of death in theUnited States (4). It is a pandemic that has its roots in adolescence almost 90 percent of adult smokers began at or before age 18 (5). Over the past ten years the number of kids under 18 who become daily smokers each year has increased by over half a million. This is a greater than 70 percent increase (6). It is estimated that 3,000 children become regular smokers each day and given current smoking and disease trends, almost a third of these underage smokers will ultimately die from tobacco use (6,7).
