The goal of the Medical and Health related services program at Kendall Demonstration Elementary School is to identify and address a students health related needs to maximize the learning capabilities of each child. Nurses, Occupational Therapists and a Physical Therapist are available on site to facilitate integration of these specialty areas into a childs daily school environment. Availability of these specialists in-house is instrumental to assuring that students are ready to address the challenges of their educational program. The KDES Health Services Program is coordinated by two registered nurses, and the goals of the program are to identify each students health needs and to maintain and improve the health status of every student in order to maximize the learning capabilities of each child. To achieve these goals, the nurses integrate their services within the instructional teams incorporating health teaching into the classroom activities, into each student contact and into their work with the students families. The nurses participate in student review and individual education plan meetings with the instructional staff and the students families. They make referrals to community agencies and serve as health advocates for the students and their families in obtaining appropriate health services. The nurses help students and their families develop health care literacy and to make the transition from home to the communities in which they live.

Ms. Toal-Sullivan has been teaching in the Occupational Therapy Program at the University of Ottawa as a part-time professor since 1993, assisting students with clinical assessment and interview techniques, lecturing on areas related to her experience as a private practice consultant, and giving courses such as Ergonomie, Douleur, and Biomechanics Applied to Activity. Ms. Toal-Sullivan, who has practiced in her field for 18 years, also holds the position of Director of Professional Practice in the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT). Geraldine Arbach spoke with Ms. Toal-Sullivan about the many facets of her work. Ms. Toal-Sullivan defined Occupational Therapy as a health profession that looks at a person's occupations, occupations being all those activities that give one's life meaning. For example, someone suffering from a stroke may have trouble moving into and out of the bathtub, getting dressed, preparing a meal, or working in an office. The question is, what does the person need to be able to return to those activities? Ms. Toal-Sullivan mentioned that it is a misconception to think that "occupation" means only "work". Physiotherapy is concerned with increasing a person's physical function; occupational therapy is concerned with what a person requires to function in his or her daily activities: caring for oneself or others, work, household activities, and leisure. Ms. Toal-Sullivan pointed out that occupational therapists have training in physical and mental health both.
