" The Whigs, seizing on this political misstep, in 1840 presented their candidate William Henry Harrison as a simple frontier Indian fighter, living in a log cabin and drinking cider, in sharp contrast to an aristocratic champagne-sipping Van Buren. Harrison was in fact a scion of the Virginia planter aristocracy. He was born at Berkeley in 1773. He studied classics and history at Hampden-Sydney College, then began the study of medicine in Richmond. Suddenly, that same year, 1791, Harrison switched interests. He obtained a commission as ensign in the First Infantry of the Regular Army, and headed to the Northwest, where he spent much of his life.

Extractions: William Henry Harrison Born: Birthplace: Charles City County, Va. William Henry Harrison was born in Charles City County, Va., on Feb. 9, 1773. Joining the army in 1791, he was active in Indian fighting in the Northwest, became secretary of the Northwest Territory in 1798 and governor of Indiana in 1800. He married Anna Symmes in 1795. Growing discontent over white encroachments on Indian lands led to the formation of an Indian alliance under Tecumseh to resist further aggressions. In 1811, Harrison won a nominal victory over the Indians at Tippecanoe and in 1813 a more decisive one at the Battle of the Thames, where Tecumseh was killed. After resigning from the army in 1814, Harrison had an obscure career in politics and diplomacy, ending up 20 years later as a county recorder in Ohio. Nominated for president in 1835 as a military hero whom the conservative politicians hoped to be able to control, he ran surprisingly well against Van Buren in 1836. Four years later, he defeated Van Buren but caught pneumonia and died in Washington on April 4, 1841, a month after his inauguration. Harrison was the first president to die in office. See also

Extractions: 9th President of the United States The birthplace of William Henry Harrison was in Charles City County, Virginia on his father's family plantation. The family plantation was called Berkeley. Berkeley Plantation is on the James River about 20 miles below Richmond. His father, Benjamin Harrison, was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. His mother was Elizabeth Bassett Harrison, a member of one of the "first families" of Virginia. On Nov. 22, 1795, William Henry Harrison married Anna Symmes, daughter of Judge John Cleves Symmes. Judge Symmes was a land speculator with a patent for a vast acreage of Ohio land. He was not very pleased with his daughter's marriage. However over the next 19 years the Harrison's became parents to 10 children. The Harrisons' children included:

Extractions: Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901), an American statesman, the twenty-third president of the United States, born in North Bend, Ohio, August 20, 1833. He was the grandson of William Henry Harrison, ninth president of the United States, and the great-grandson of Benjamin Harrison, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. In 1852 he graduated from Miami University and went to Cincinnati, where he studied law. Two years later he removed to Indianapolis, Indiana, where he built up a large law practice and resided whenever not on duty in Washington. Harrison entered the Union army in 1862 as lieutenant, and shortly afterward was appointed colonel of the 70th Indiana Volunteers, which he organized. He fought bravely in the Atlanta campaign and about Nashville, and at the close of the war left the military with the rank of brevet brigadier-general. Harrison returned to Indianapolis and resumed the practice of law, but became a professor of international law at Leland Stanford Junior University. He was counsel for Venezuela before the arbitration tribunal in 1899 and chief representative of the United States at the Hague Peace Conference. He died March 13, 1901.

Extractions: Winning the first presidency by a unanimous vote, with some individuals having wished to make Washington king, it seems unusual that he did not really want the position of president. Although a successful general and president, Washington remained interested in farming throughout his presidency. He bred animals, specializing in the breeding of mules and helped to raise the quality of stock across the nation. As the first president, Washington had many new tasks to accomplish with trial and error as the only available method for accomplishing them. After appointing people to head the four executive departments, he tried to meet with each head, or ] secretary, individually. This proved to be daunting. As a result he had the secretaries meet with him as a group, forming the government's first cabinet. New York was the nations first capital, but people felt that the capital should be outside the territory of any states. George Washington selected the site for our current capital between the states of Maryland and Virginia. While the new capital was being built, Washington led the country from Philadelphia, which served as a temporary capital.

William Henry Harrison served in the Indian wars in the NW territory, War of 1812. Harrison's inaugural address was the longest of any president.
