The metal strings are sounded by plucking with a small piece of material called a plectrum which is attached to the key mechanism. A downward stroke on the key raises the plectrum on the other end so that it plucks the string and then pivots so that it does not touch the string on the way down. Harpsichord details Index Musical instruments ... Go Back Ranks of Organ Pipes A complete set of organ pipes of the same type is called a rank. In a large modern organ, the keyboard span is typically five octaves from C2 to C7. With 12 semitones per octave, this gives 61 pipes for a rank. Five doublings of length means that the longest pipe in a rank is 32 times the length of the shortest pipe. Since the idea of a rank is to produce a set of pipes with similar tone quality, it has been found to be necessary to scale the diameters in a different way than the lengths. In order to enhance the higher harmonic content of the longer pipes, it has been found desirable to make their diameters smaller in proportion to their lengths. In a rank, the diameter of the longest pipe will be 12 to 13 times the diameter of the shortest pipe, while the length has increased by a factor of 32.

A buff stop was added in order to facilitate the performance of French harpsichord literature from the 1760s. The instrument is quilled in bird quill (a mixture of seagull and vulture). It is strung according to the schedule published by Michel Corrette in chapter 21 of Le Maitre de Clavecin pour laccompagnement, méthode théorique et pratique, 1753. It is tuned most of the time to Rameau's modified meantone temperament (published in 1726). This model of harpsichord was built by the Blanchet firm probably from the late 1720s possibly through to the early 1740s. It is characterized by its unusual length and depth of case. Three instruments from these years are extant, those of 1730 and 1733 and one undated instrument, which currently belongs to Alan Rubin of London (A68). Interestingly the inventory of Francois Couperin's possessions made after his death in 1733 shows that he owned a "large harpsichord by Blanchet." We may posit that the adjective "large" suggests that Couperin in his later years owned an instrument of this model. Discography: Owner: Dr. R. Dean Anderson (b. 1963), Holland. Since 1999 I've had people call it a dozen different things from Zither to Dulicmer, Harpsichord to Harp, or even a Hammer Dulcimer. But I'm sorry to say, it is just called the Autoharp or Chromaharp by some. So to help clarify things a big, let me tell ye a little about the other instruments: According to the Dictionary, the zither is a stringed instrument consisting of usually 30-40 strings stretched over a flat-sounding box. It is played horizontally with the fingertips, a plectrum, a bow, or sometimes by wind, as is the case with the Aeolian harp. Traditionally, it is a folk instrument of Austria and the Bavarian Alps. The melody strings are stopped against frets on the finger board while being plucked with a plectrum. Alternate names: zitera, cithara, kitthar, cither, zithern., or German version of the cittern.
