Extractions: A Brief History of the Harpsichord The harpsichord is a musical instrument whose strings are plucked from a keyboard and which sits on a table or stand while being played. They have been made in varying shapes, sizes and sounds over the years. They were called virginals in Elizabethan England, a term today reserved in English for harpsichords whose strings are parallel to the keyboard. The ancestor of the harpsichord was the psaltery. When played with a plectrum held in one hand, and the strings damped by the other hand, it could handle rapid organal parts. In this example, it is being plucked with both hands, playing with a harp and bells. From the attention the player is paying to the harpist, she is obviously playing a subordinate part. The psaltery is occasionally shown being played flat on a lap, but it is then easily confused with the dulcimer, which was struck with hammers like a xylophone. By the late 1300s, a keyboard was being added to the psaltery, at right angles to the soundboard in a manner similar to portative organs of the time. It remained a small hand-held instrument and had the Latin name clavicytherium. This is probably the instrument referred to as an exaquir in 1387, "an instrument like an organ which sounds by means of strings". What we know today as a harpsichord seems to have evolved in the early 1400s in Flanders. The earliest ones had the thick cases typical of later Flemish instruments, but were small by later standards and had no jack rail. Their complex plucking mechanisms survive in a set of drawings c1440 by Henri Arnaut in Burgundy. Some of these plucked the strings with a quill like the psaltery, some with metal plectra, and at least one struck the strings with a metal staple in the manner of the dulcimer. The earliest surviving representation is an altar carving from Germany ca.1425. The second is from England: a beautiful stained glass window attributed to John Prudd c1440 in the Beauchamp chapel of St.Mary's Church, Warwick England that clearly shows its Flemish influence in the case decoration.

He works in a converted eighteenth century quayside warehouse in the City of Lancaster, England, with two assistants, and personally attends to each stage of the demanding process of making a hand crafted keyboard instrument. In 1977 he won a Churchill Scholarship and travelled to the USA where he studied instruments in the major collections as well as visiting other makers. Due to this opportunity and visits to European collections he has inspected, collected data on, and (where possible) played all the originals of the instruments offered here. The workshop has tended to specialise in instruments from the Flemish, French and North German traditions, as can be seen in the online catalogue. In addition to these instruments, many others have been studied and documented, some copied. We aim to ensure that the clients individual requirements are fulfilled, so if you are seeking a certain type of instrument we would be pleased to discuss it with you

An early interest in music and the piano later developed into a keen interest in the construction of keyboard instruments. A five year apprenticeship in harpsichord making was undertaken with the old firm of Arnold Dolmetsch Ltd in Haslemere. During this time every aspect of harpsichord design, building, regulation and tuning was covered. A certificate to mark the completion of this apprenticeship was presented in 1963 by the Managing Director, Carl F Dolmetsch. Thoughts were always on starting his own harpsichord workshop but a wider experience in harpsichord manufacture was needed. A vacancy at John Feldberg, Sevenoaks, Kent, suited this requirement and Hugh spent valuable time building many large concert harpsichords, including Neupert Doubles. A period of time was spent at the frantic workshop of William De Blaise Harpsichords where instruments were produced on a three tier bonus system, the speed of construction concentrating the mind in the workshop. Hugh decided to move to Australia to establish his first business, taking with him the first Hugh Craig designed 8', 4' Single Manual Harpsichord for demonstration and hire. The firm of Hugh Craig Harpsichords was established with a wide range of Hugh's designs from the 8' small spinet to Concert Doubles 16', 8', 8', 4', 4'. Being the first fully qualified harpsichord maker to set up business in Australia was a great challenge but rewarded with orders both within and outside Australia. Further recognition of Hugh's craftsmanship came when he won the commission to build the Double Manual Concert harpsichord for the Sydney Opera House.

It has served as the major string keyboard instrument for substantially longer than its descendant the piano, and still at the end of the millenium is much in use, both in early music performance and in various new applications. There are perhaps three distinctions which help catagorize the instruments. There are national schools (chiefly Flemish, Italian, French, German, and English), time frame (conveniently thought of by century - 16th, 17th, 18th, and 20th), and instrument type (harpsichord, spinette, virginal, but with several rich and strange variations, such as the lautenwerk or the clavicyntherium). The history of the harpsichord is somewhat odd in that it contains a dramatic hiatus: harpsichord making simply died in the nineteenth century (a victim, some will argue, of Romanticism) and was only revived again in the twentieth. At first the revival engendered some very different kinds of instruments indeed, and it is only in the second half of the century that we find the emphasis again on early styles of building. We are able then to make the additional distinction between historic, revival, and modern instruments.

At the same time, we are using these pieces to demonstrate the different domestic keyboard instruments of Bach's time his home in fact: the harpsichord and clavichord, together with the lute whose delicate sounds Bach sought in the lute-harpsichord. The harpsichord was the baroque period's most popular domestic keyboard instrument, though the clavichord would be a close second. The harpsichord with the usual two manuals was a useful practice instrument for organists, and they were often equipped with pedalboards. The harpsichord's "pluck" was fixed and no variation of touch was possible, only dynamic variation through using different "stops" and/or combining, coupling-up keyboards.

Although no antique harpsichords have survived the ages with their original pedal boards, enough 17th and 18th century references may be found to corroborate the existence of these exotic instruments.
