Extractions: No wonder Bach had one custom-built to his own specifications. Over a period of some three centuries there are plenty of references to gut-stringed instruments that resemble the harpsichord and imitate the delicate soft timbre of the lute (including its lower-sounding variants, the theorbo and chitarrone or archlute) or the harp, but little concrete information. Not a single such instrument has survived, nor is any contemporary depiction known apart from a rough engraving of the early 16th century. Fewer than ten lute-harpsichord makers are known, and there are reasonably detailed descriptions of instruments made by only two or three of them. Nonetheless, the instrument is mentioned fairly frequently in music books of the early 17th to the mid-18th century. Much of the available information relates to three 18th century German instrument makers: Johann Christoph Fleischer of Hamburg, Johann Nicolaus Bach and the organ builder Zacharias Hildebrandt. Fleishcer built two types of instrument. The smaller had two 8-foot gut-stringed stops with a compass of about three octaves; in the lower two octaves these could be coupled with a 4-foot stop, by analogy with the pairs of octave-tuned bass strings (courses) on the lute. Below the soundboard of the instrument an oval resonator in the shape of a shell, resembling the body of a lute was attached.

In the 1920s, Dolmetsch recorded Bach's 48 Preludes and Fugues on this large oak double strung clavichord, strongly influenced by late German makers contemporary with Bach. We also make 'historical models' - a Kirkman single manual (based on an 18th century original) and a Taskin double manual (one of the noblest harpsichords from the French high baroque). Dolmetsch's experience as a restorer of original instruments, gave him the knowledge to satisfy the burgeoning interest in early music at the start of the twentieth century, in which movement he stands as a progressive figure, as well as preparing him as a designer and maker of new models. We still make many models he and his son Carl Dolmetsch designed but we are also restorers and makers of 'copies' of surviving instruments. Repair and restoration work is performed with the intention of rendering instruments "concert" ready. My clients here in the arid Western United States including the Aspen Music Festival and Institute, Denver School of the Arts and the University of Northern Colorado have the advantage of purchasing an instrument made from wood that has acclimated to a drier climate. This insures stability of tuning and lessens the need for frequent and costly adjustments to the action. Instruments brought here from the wetter coastal areas and Europe invariably develop numerous splits and cracks in the soundboard and case. Conversely however, when I send an instrument from here to a moister environment, the wood merely expands a bit but does not break. Extractions: Update March 1, 2004 For more than a quarter century I have been making harpsichords and clavichords for individuals and institutions across North America. My instruments are entirely custom made to suit my customer's needs and desires. The designs I use are drawn from antique instruments of proven musical value; the materials I use and the methods I use to make my harpsichords are the very best I have been able to find. My harpsichords are remarkably close to the originals, especially with respect to the sound they produce and the feel of the action. I am also very concerned about the musical and functional utility of the harpsichords I make. So while they are historically accurate, they are also easy to live with. My harpsichords are entirely made by hand, right down to the tuning pins; I use no kits or kit parts. At left is a French double after Blanchet made for the Music Department at the University of North Dakota. This harpsichord stands as an example of my finest work. This instrument is a survivor of the great Red River flood of 1997. After repairs were made, the instrument sounded and played just as well, if not better, than it had originally!

This instrument is very closely based on a diminutive "six-foot" Andreas Ruckers harpsichord made in 1640. This is an exquisite, lovely instrument, with the full, penetrating sound found in the best Flemish harpsichords. It is disposed with an 8' choir and a 4' choir, with a split buff stop on the 8'. The range is C-ddd, enough to tackle most of J.S.Bach, for whose music this harpsichord is nearly ideal. The instrument is finished with an enameled exterior, and Flemish printed papers on the interior surfaces. The rack-guided keyboard has boxwood naturals and ebonized oak sharps. Its size and weight (about 40 lbs) make it easily transported. $15,500.00 petite ravalementafter Andreas Ruckers, 1640 Fundamentally the same as my Flemish harpsichord (above), except with an enlarged range of GG-BB-ddd short octave bass. With a single 8' and 4', and a split buff stop, this instrument accommodates a wider library of music without having to re-tune the bass notes. The case is a bit wider, longer and slightly heavier, but is finished in the same manner as the Flemish Harpsichord. $15,875.00

Extractions: Introduction to the Harpsichord and Clavichord Two types of stringed keyboard instrument were available to the household or court musician from the 16th century to the middle of the 18th: the harpsichord and its near relations, the spinet and virginal; and the clavichord. In the harpsichord family the string is plucked by a small plectrum, originally of quill but nowadays usually Delrin. The variety of sound from these plucked instruments is achieved not primarily by finger pressure, but more subtly by phrasing and articulation. Variety of tonal colour can be obtained, on a harpsichord in particular, by judicious choice of registration. The harpsichord was used both for solo performance and accompanying in chamber groups and in larger ensembles of the period. It typically had two sets of strings per key, tuned either to the same pitch or with one set sounding an octave higher (a 4' register). On later instruments an additional device could be found, called a buff (or sometimes harp) stop to give a pizzicato effect. The registers were controlled by hand stops above the keyboard. Two manuals (keyboards) were to be found on certain larger instruments, which usually featured three sets of strings. The spinet is a smaller, domestic harpsichord normally with one string per note. Having a shorter string length, the strings often run diagonally from the keyboard in order to save space. The virginal (or virginals, the plural being equally correct) also has one string per note but here these run parallel to the keyboard. This useful domestic instrument was more popular than the harpsichord in northern Europe (particularly in England and the Low Countries) in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.

Extractions: Our Instruments The single manual harpsichord shown first, with matching stool, is in the decorated style with bone natural key coverings, paper decoration, a turned stand and mouldings. The double manual harpsichord is in the moulded style, with our standard ebony keyboard, a turned stand and mouldings. Our bentside spinet is based on examples of this popular 18th century domestic keyboard instrument. It has a single 8' register and a buff stop. The five octave compass, from F1 to f3, and sonorous tone of this instrument make it suitable for nearly all the solo repertoire and for continuo playing. It shares with the harpsichord a pleasing wing shape which reflects the natural increase in string length from treble to bass. The case is 168×63×15 cm overall. The bentside spinet shown is in solid walnut which we can provide to special order. Some octave spinets with triangular form have survived from the 17th and 18th centuries, though none at normal pitch. However, we have found that a normal pitch triangular spinet, despite the limited compass permitted by the short bass strings, is very versatile for solo and ensemble playing. Our triangular spinet is derived from the bentside form. It has a lively resonant tone quite out of proportion to its modest size. The compass is C to f3, 4½ octaves. The case measures 109×61×15 cm. The triangular spinet shown has chestnut casework. Both our spinets have a pleasing contemporary appearance and are easily portable. Many are used in schools and by groups playing renaissance and baroque music. Because of their straightforward construction the kits are an excellent home or school project, and a good introduction to early keyboard instrument making and playing.
