Customer Service Select a Holiday Topic By Maureen Hegarty Today, you might be trimming the Christmas tree, and your neighbor next door might be sharing a Hanukkah meal while friends across town fast in preparation for 'Eid-ul-Fitr. Families across the country are preparing for different holidays, but most of us will end the year in a similar way gathering with relatives, enjoying great food, and giving gifts. Despite some common traditions, your child may be confused by other people's celebrations. She doesn't understand why her best friend gets presents for eight days or why your family doesn't decorate a tree "like they do on TV."

Extractions: Most Westerners know of Hanukkah from the appearance on calendars, but few outside of Judaism know much more about it than the very basic candle-lighting, and even that most of the goyim dont really understand. This book, Festival of Lights: The Story of Hanukkah, by Maida Silverman, is in reality a childrens book; however, like many childrens books, it is a wonderful teaching tool, and this one could teach adults just as well as it can children. The book is beautifully illustrated by Carolyn Ewing. The full-colour pictures, appearing on every page, show people in period settings and costumes. Hanukkah is based on actual historical events; unlike Yom Kippur which is a more philosophical/theological holiday, this one is much more an historical memory event. That, of course, is fully in keeping with the general importance given to history by the Jewish people.
Ohr Torah Stone | Features | Q & A With Rabbi Riskin The message of hanukkah is perhaps the most important message, thatwe must teach ourselves and then teach the world. A little light http://www.ohrtorahstone.org.il/features/isracast_transcript.htm
Extractions: http://www.isracast.com/riskin.asx Mordechai Twersky (Host): For IsraCast.com, this is Mordechai Twersky reporting. It's my great honor, pleasure and privilege to introduce to our international listening audience Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, who is the Chief Rabbi in Efrat, founder and Chancellor of Ohr Torah Stone, and longtime spiritual leader, educator and communal leader, who joins us today to impart a special Hanukkah message to the international Jewish community. Thank you for being with us, Rabbi Riskin. Rabbi Shlomo Riskin: Thank you very much. This is a very difficult Hanukkah for us. It's a Hanukkah which begins in the wake of two terrible attacks, one here in Beit Shean, and the other in Mombassa, Kenya. Attacks which make us feel that a Jew is not safe anywhere, not in Israel, not anywhere in the world. And then we gather to light our Hanukkah menorah and must intone a blessing, "Blessed art thou, Lord our G-d, King of the world, who has sanctified us with His commandments, and has commanded us to kindle the light of Hanukkah; the G-d who has done miracles for our fathers and for us, at this time." How do we understand Hanukkah in the light of the terrible tragedy that seems to be engulfing us? You know, probably one of the most fundamental questions that one must ask concerning Hanukkah. There are two distinct miracles. Hanukkah took place close to two thousand years ago. The Jews fighting against the Greek-Syrians. The Jews fighting against Hellenist ideology. The fundamental mystery seemed to have been the victory at war. We say it, every day, in our standing silent prayer called the 'Amidah'. "Al Hanissim" - we thank G-d for the miracles, the days of Mattathias the high priest, when the Greek-Syrians came and wanted to take away from us our political independence, our unique religious way of life. We fought back and we won. The many succumbed to the few. The wicked succumbed to the righteous.

Los Angeles Times - Tuesday, December 23, 1997 By KAREN ROBINSON-JACOBS TIMES STAFF WRITER With the flick of a switch, 20-year-old Refaya Lowinger pulls her motorized wheelchair to a stop. The slight young woman, one of several 'teachers' aides with the Etta Israel Center on L.A.'s Westside, is taking a break from her Sunday school lessons to talk about the spiritual needs of young people with disabilities. Taking the chair next to her is 15-year-old Rivka, "almost the oldest" of nine children being raised in an Orthodox Jewish home. Together, the two are teacher and student and the topic of the moment is Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, which begins at sundown tonight. Words do not always come easily for Rivka, who is mildly retarded. She looks to Refaya for help in articulating the lessons she has already learned. She knows that in class they light the menorah, play with the dreidel and eat latkes.

Extractions: Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah Three celebrations, one season - So how do they relate? Kwanzaa is new; Christmas and Hanukkah are old. They're three December celebrations. Three variations on the Judeo-Christian spiritual tradition. Three ways to bond with one's family and community. Hanukkah is a secondary Jewish holiday, relatively less important than Passover and Yom Kippur. But because it coincides with the weeks before Christmas, it's achieved the status of an alternative to Christmas in many 20th-century Jewish households. As Leah Akins writes, its origins date back to about 167 B.C. A Jewish army, led by Judah the Maccabee, recaptured Jerusalem from the Greeks (who had conquered the city during the reign of Alexander the Great, some three centuries before). Judah's men tried to re-consecrate the Jewish temple by lighting its menorah (a sacramental lamp). But, as the legend tells it, there was only enough of the special ritual oil on the premises to keep the menorah lit for one day. But when they lit the lamp, it stayed lit for eight dayslong enough for the Jews to make more oil. Over the years, the miracle of the oil became the central focus of Hanukkah celebrations. Families lit one candle on each of nine consecutive nights, remembering a different aspect of the holiday and of Jewish tradition. Christmas has its origin story in the birth of Jesus, as recorded in the Gospels. But the earliest Christians appear not to have treated his birth with the same importance they gave to his death and resurrection. After Emporer Constantine made Christianity the official religion of Rome, the faith began to spread across Europe.

Extractions: Meal Time! Recipes A Husband's Opinion Dear Emma In the old days, come Sunday many African-American households were abuzz long before the sun began inching up to its heavenly perch. Mom commanded the children to rise and shine. Church awaited. Half-sleep and fully agitated, the youngsters would bathe and dress, then spend several hours - more if the preacher was on a roll - fighting sleep and dodging scolding slaps. Mom prayed that maybe one of those glancing blows would keep her youngsters conscious long enough to hear a word or two of the sermon. As adults, some abandoned church all together. Why go? Pastor talks too long - particularly during football season. Then something unexpected happens: Parenthood. Suddenly, these adults who for years had been AWOL from church now find themselves seeking their withered spiritual roots. They want to create sacred moments and a feeling of warmth in their families. They want their children to understand how important it is both to be good and to feel that they matter. They want their children to feel comfortable searching for the answers to the larger questions of life.

Extractions: 192 pages. Jewish Lights. $18.95. Must Hanukkah always be in competition with Christmas as the perennial "other winter holiday" on the American calendar? One might get that initial impression when reading the first pages of Ron Wolfson's Hanukah: The Family Guide to Spiritual Celebration . The book opens up with an essay on Christmas-envy and the author's boyhood memories in Nebraska halashing (Yiddish for pining for or envying) Christmas lights and celebrations. My childhood memories growing up in the East Bay of San Francisco are similar ( sans snow), and as a Jewish educator I heard about this dilemma a lot. Parents would often say to me, "How can I make Hanukkah as exciting as Christmas?" And my answer to them was, "Don't. This is not a competition. But if you really want to head-off Christmas-envy, make a really big deal about Sukkot." That said, Hanukkah is a holiday rich with opportunity. Its rituals and its lore give it many possibilities for meaning: this is a holiday of how the few stood up to the many, about the freedom to practice one's own religion. It is a holiday about miracles, a holiday about light, a holiday about God.

Extractions: Raising a non-Christian child in a predominantly Christian country is a constant challenge. But around Christmas, life can get particularly complicated. Because Hanukkah falls so close to Christmas, it's tempting for Jewish parents to try to turn it into a similar holiday experience. But this can send a confusing message to kids. From Frosty to Santa, the secular symbols of Christmas and the magical world they suggest are so enticing for children that no matter how hard parents try to twist Hanukkah into a "Jewish Christmas," it comes off as a pale and not very satisfying substitute. What's a parent to do? Hanukkah is a joyous and meaningful holiday that doesn't need wrapping in Christmas tinsel. But it's not easy for Jewish parents to find effective ways to cope with the secular hoopla that surrounds Christmas. It is very much a part of American life and few children, even non-Christian children, are immune to its lure. Here are some tips and ideas to help you and your family navigate the commercialism and have a meaningful Hanukkah.
