Extractions: The Sport M was certified and released in September just before the St Hilaire festival and since then Airwave has been flat out producing Sports. In fact the demand has been quite staggering, especially considering that autumn is traditionally quiet. Since its release the Sport M has been getting great reviews across the world, and the Large flies in just the same way. The Sport Large has now completed all the DHV tests and has passed DHV1-2 with a weight range of 95-120kg. The test results were very similar to the Medium Sport with the same top speed of 50km/h. The Sport L is therefore in production with the first gliders expected in the Airwave factory in Austria later this week. Bruce is currently working on the Sport S and XL which are expected to be certified in January 2002. Brothers Richard and Guy Westgate have just finished their World record attempt in Brazil during the Xciera Cross Country competition. Conditions were flyable everyday with some good distances acheived but unfortunately no records were broken this year. On the 30th November Richard and Guy managed to fly 143.6km, finishing 9th in the competition that day, which is quite impressive when you consider it was not a Tandem competition! For more details and some lovely pictures of epic skies take a look at the Xciera web site at www.xceara.com

Hang Gliding In The Lone Pine Area Spring and Fall offer the best flying conditions for everyday recreational hanggliding and for those seeking an introduction to flying in thermals, and cross http://www.lonepinechamber.org/recreation/hanggliding.html
Extractions: The lower Owens Valley is well-known among flying enthusiasts worldwide for "Big Air", powerful bone-jarring turbulence and record breaking flights. During the warmer temperates of summer the valley creates conditions perfect for altitude gain and open distance flying. Many world records have been achieved by sail planes, hang gliders and paragliders. Flying here is a serious proposition, having some of the strongest lift anywhere which can lift pilots to altitudes of 18,000 feet where oxygen starvation and cold are risks it is not for beginners. Spring and Fall offer the best flying conditions for everyday recreational hang gliding and for those seeking an introduction to flying in thermals, and cross-country flights. The winter months can offer calmer flying conditions better suited to training for the less experienced. The normal flying season is Memorial Day through Labor Day. During this period there is a Porta-A-Potty available.

Extractions: Soaring enthusiasts come down to earth Published Friday, February 8, 2002 12:00:00 AM By MATT KRUPNICK STAFF WRITER Conference features sailplanes, hang gliders, ultralights ONTARIO Like migratory birds taking a brief break at ground level, thousands of air-sports enthusiasts began arriving at the Ontario Convention Center on Thursday for the Air Sports Expo. About 60 exhibitors and a variety of hang gliders, sailplanes and ultralight aircraft greeted visitors, which will run through Saturday. Exhibits ranged from parachutes to vintage sailplanes. Participants wandered among the exhibits and 90-foot-wide sailplanes Thursday, meeting old friends and reveling in the aviation-focused atmosphere. ''We have yet to see aviation become what it almost certainly has to become: the ability to take off out of your yard and go to the store,'' said Ken de Russy, a self-described hang-gliding historian from Anacortes, Wash. ''There is a day coming when man will be able to fly much like we now move comfortably over and through the water.'' Among the scheduled speakers were Paul MacCready, creator of the human-powered Gossamer Albatross aircraft that crossed the English Channel, and several accomplished aviators.
Extractions: Think of it as just another kind of kite. Primary hang glider instruction in Cesar Chavez Park has been shut down by the City, citing the Land Use Plan for the park: "The publicly owned land north of Spinnaker Way should be used for unstructured public recreation. The area will be pedestrian and bike oriented (with no public roads through or around the area), protected from the intrusion of incompatible uses." Whether hang gliding is an "incompatible use" is an open issue - the "intrusion" referred to in the plan was intended to keep out various forms of motorized recreational vehicles. This does not preclude unanticipated uses; it is worth noting that no form of kite flying was anticipated in the park plan. Certainly the laissez-faire tolerance for unusual and diverse activities such as hang gliding is a valued characteristic of this park, and is very much within the spirit and intent of "unstructured" recreation.

Extractions: What's a hang glider? History Staying Up! Control Systems ... Instructors "Temporary Australians!", "Thrill Seekers!", "A danger to themselves - they should be stopped for their own good!" "But, what happens when the wind stops?!!"* Hang gliding has come a long way since poorly trained Icarus flying untested wings made a grave pilot error and paid the ultimate price. Todays hang gliders are carefully designed, safe aircraft, and the pilots well versed in the lore of the sky. But what about the thrills? Well, some pilots do work up adrenalin in aerobatic flight or in the new speed gliding competitions. Others, however, discover the serenity of floating in a silent sky, or simply enjoy flying with friends. For many, competition is the key, while many strive to set new personal bests. In August, 2000, a hang glider pilot flew 555km in one flight to set a new World Record. Of all the ways a man can fly, probably hang gliding comes closest to what it probably feels like to be a bird.
