Extractions: Entrepreneur's Start-Ups magazine , By Mike Besack, July 2001 What kind of a man grabs a set of artificial wings and charges full-blast off a cliff? Turns out, a smart businessman. Plug in your pun of choice: In this business, the sky's definitely the limit. "I must say, the first two years we've seen nothing but growth. And it's so easy. People love it," says the 35-year-old Kroll. "All you need to know for hang gliding is, run like hell and don't touch anything." Kroll earned his college degree in music, of all things, but started hang gliding in 1984. After doing a few instructing gigs in Australia, he decided to take a shot at starting his own business. After all, the closest hang-gliding company to his Bay Area home was in San Diego. "I noticed that my boss in Australia paid off his house at the beach in three years," Kroll says. "I started thinking, if that guy could do that well in Sydney, I can do well in San Francisco." He has. Kroll, with his introductory tandem lessons, takes his customers up to 3,000 feet over the San Francisco Bay after just five minutes of instruction. That's all it takes. His hang-gliding tours leave from Mt. Tamalpias State Park, 10 minutes north of the Golden Gate Bridge, and his introductory Aquaglider lessons soar over Alcatraz and the rest of the Bay and last for about 30 minutes. The cost is about $250 a pop, and Kroll even straps a video camera on the wing so the hang gliders can have a souvenir at no extra charge.
Extractions: by Bodhi Kroll. Hang Gliding Contra Costa Times . August, 1998. Would you like to do what you love, hang gliding or paragliding, 300 days a year, and earn $250 to $350 a day doing it? Is it possible to make a living working only three or four days a week and a great living if one is willing to work five or six days a week flying? That's exactly what I've managed to do. After 16 years of hang gliding for sport, teaching and instructional tandem flight, I opened the San Francisco Hang Gliding Center (SFHGC). This is a successful business, not only for me, but for two other full-time instructors (and we could use even more). But getting to this point was quite a task. It involved a lot of hard work, planning and negotiating with state and county officials but it was all worth it. Here's how it all began. In June of 1984, at the age of 18, inspired by a series of intense flying dreams since boyhood in Berkeley, California, watching red tail hawks and turkey vultures soaring over the hills, and television shows featuring our sport, I signed up for some lessons at a local hang gliding operation in Fremont, California (Mission Soaring Center). I saved money from newspaper routes, bussing dishes in a local eatery and doing scut-work at Mission Soaring. My first glider was a Harrier 177.

Improved climb and gilde performance has been achieved by changing to a new low drag airfoil with matching sail cut, the glide ratio has been demonstrated to give competitive advantage with a faster glide. Enhanced energy retention has been designed into the sail so that the wing can extract energy through gusts and reduce energy losses through pull ups. Two new features have been added to bring this about. The new double stitched batten pockets have been employed to hold the wing to the batten profile and the new tip structure is built to change the tension lines in the sail so that the airfoil is held accurately between the battens.

Learning To Hang Glide Australian kite fliers soon introduced Dickenson s design to the rest ofthe world, and suddenly recreational hang gliding began its boom. http://www.hgfa.asn.au/learning/learning_hangglider.htm
Extractions: Learning to Hang Glide Hang gliding has come a long way since the early days. Today's hang gliders are carefully designed, safe aircraft, and the pilots understand the air better than ever before. But what about the thrills? Well, some pilots do work up adrenalin in aerobatics or speed gliding, and in August, 2000 a hang glider pilot flew 555km for a new World Record. Others simply enjoy the serenity of floating in a silent sky, or flying with friends. The basic hang glider was pretty much invented by an Australian engineer, John Dickenson, in 1963. He first built a kite based on a NASA Gemini space capsule recovery wing, with all the basic features of today's wings, including the triangular control bar. Australian kite fliers soon introduced Dickenson's design to the rest of the world, and suddenly recreational hang gliding began its boom. FLEX WING hang gliders are the most closely related to the original early 1970's hang gliders. They have a basic tubing frame and a flexible wing made of sailcloth, stiffened into an aerofoil shape by aluminium battens. They are usually wire-braced, and controlled by shifting the pilot weight. "Floaters" are designed for new pilots or for those who want an easy to fly, light, and simple machine. They're great for just getting out and having a great time, no matter what your experience level. "Intermediate" gliders provide better performance for the advancing pilot, but are a little heavier and require more skill. "Advanced" wings tend to be heavier still, with excellent performance, but require extra pilot skill and judgement to fly safely. Many of the most recent advanced wings use cantilever composite structure, and use advanced aerodynamics.

Recreation is often distinguished from leisure. Where leisure is, or ought to be, restful, recreation is refreshing and diverting. As we lead more and more sedentary life styles, the need for recreation has grown. The rise of so called active vacations exemplify this. Extractions: By ANTONIO A. PRADO e-mail: aprado@newspress.com NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER Colorful hang gliders and paragliders floating through Santa Barbara's picturesque skies have long been a familiar sight. Despite public fascination with the flyers, however, it is illegal for them to land their craft at city parks and beaches. That may soon change. City parks and recreation commissioners unanimously endorsed a plan Wednesday to allow hang glider and paraglider landings at Parma Park and East Beach. The plan must next be considered by the City Council's Ordinance Committee, then return to commissioners for a final review before being sent the full council for approval. "We are very, very excited about having gotten to this point," said Dr. Glenn E. Miller, a past president of the Santa Barbara Soaring Association and chairman of the group's Site Preservation Committee. "It's been a long and arduous process." The proposed change would mark a turnaround in the city's legal view of the daredevil sport.

This technique is proven to be by Far the safest and quickest way to get into the sport of Hang gliding!! By Using a Double- Decker harness and a Proven and Certified tandem glider, it allows the student free movement of the controls without the hindrance of the instructor (normally beside the student) and allows the instructor to take command of the glider when needed. By doing around 10 - 15 aero tows to 3000 feet gives the student pilot around 5 hours of in-flight instruction , finding that most students can fly the tandem glider AICUS (acting in command under supervision) from takeoff to landing completely by themselves in this time.
