Extractions: Time to Write uses a multisensory approach to teach handwriting and perceptual skills. It has been written with both the global and the sequential learner in mind. It lends itself to many learning station activities which have been designed to develop and enhance both gross and fine motor skills. Unlike many writing programs, it does not use a dot on a page as a starting point for letter formation. In fact, is unique in its use of a clock face as the field of reference for the starting point of all its letters, symbols, and geometric shapes. Familiarity with such a concrete reference point enables a student to always know where to begin, whether the writing activity is on the chalkboard or on lined or unlined paper. combines a color code (to stimulate visual memory and to ensure proper sequencing of strokes) and a concise, precise set of auditory directions to equip students with definite tools which they can use to facilitate the learning of writing and perceptual skills. Educators have known for quite some time that children who have perceptual deficiencies find academic learning very difficult. They have problems with reversals, directionality, position-in-space, size constancy and letter formation, to mention just a few. These problems most often show up in handwriting.

Extractions: Handwriting Without Tears instruction can easily fit into the day of any teacher. The program encourages teachers to spend 10 minutes per day instructing handwriting, then recommends allowing the children 5 minutes of practice time with the new skills that have been introduced. With the short 5-minute practice sessions children remain excited, alert and eager to come back for more. Since HWT is set up for children to build on the skills that they have mastered, new letters are immediately put into words. Eventually, the words are put into sentences, and the children are continuously using the letters previously learned, thus developing proficiency in handwriting. Handwriting instruction can take place during a time that has been singled out for "handwriting", during Language Arts time, and even during math instruction when working on the formation of numbers. Many Kindergarten teachers begin the day with handwriting instruction so that the new letter / stroke / word / number that is being taught, can be used throughout the day, again, developing proficiency in handwriting.

Extractions: Homepage Why Learn Cursive Writing When to Learn Cursive Writing How to Learn Cursive Writing ... Practice Worksheets How to Teach Cursive Handwriting Oversee practice so children don't fill a page with improper work simply to finish quickly. Praise letters and words written well and have the student erase and rewrite anything unacceptable. While this may seem time consuming, remember that it will actually take more time to undo bad habits. Young children should use large writing or painting tools for better control. Don't be concerned about letter size at first, instead, emphasize form, letting them draw on blank paper with easy-to-hold "fat" markers, crayons, or paintbrushes which allow less pressure to be used in drawing a solid looking line. Be sure the children use the same grip required later for paper and pencil work. For those children that insist on using adult pens and pencils, add a finger grip (available at many educational supply and office supply stores). Begin with lines and shapes, encouraging children to draw all vertical lines from the top to the bottom. All circular shapes should begin at the 2 o'clock position, moving up, left, and around-like the letter c. (Kids tend to start at the top and make egg shapes.) Shapes using straight lines-triangles, rectangles, and squares, should always use individual lines that meet, not a single stroke with an attempt to make "pointy" corners. Every line should be drawn left to right or top to bottom. Vertical lines are drawn first, left side, then right side, and then the connecting horizontal lines. The horizontal lines on top are first, and all horizontal lines should begin at the left. Kids have their own short cuts, so these basics do need to be taught.
