But, I haven't heard anyone do much reflecting on exactly what's going on, what's valuable in this experience, what's merely some romantic urge for OTHERNESS . So, I thought I'd begin the process. Your comments and thoughts would be appreciated. I often feel a sort of vague and general dis-ease when I return from Haiti. I have named it a dislike of American culture, or a cultural re-entry shock. But these labels explain little, and the first seems simply false. I have lived and continue to live in the United States and I am much too happy a person to continue on in this happiness if I'm truly living in a culture I dislike. What's going on here? The central difference between life as we encounter it and work with it in Haiti and our lives in the United States has to do with basic survival. Life in Haiti, in the circles of our work and primary concern is basic survival. People struggle for daily food, they scrounge for potable water, they hunt for the basic health care to stay alive, they search for shelter from the rains, bugs, rats or beating sun. They struggle to find part-time work on a daily basis. They are underclothed, underfed, undersheltered and undertended. On the other hand, most of us from the middle and upper classes not only have all of these things but we take them for granted, view them as sort of birth right. Our struggles are for growth, security, personal pleasure, entertainment, enrichment, culture etc.

Most of the guns in Haiti come from the disbanded army Most of the guns now being carried by armed militias here came from the Haitian army. It was disbanded in 1994 by Jean Bertrand Aristide, then newly restored as President of the troubled Caribbean nation by an American-led multinational military force. He had been overthrown by the army three years earlier when he won election as Haiti's first democratically elected head of state. Breaking up the army was seen at the time as a bold, necessary step. It was a way to get rid of an institution that had plagued Haiti with military coups and human rights abuses for generations. But the legacy of Haiti's army is the vast number of rifles, pistols and shotguns wielded by ragtag militia groups today.

In the Dominican Republic, this antagonism has led to the creation of a set of anti-Haitian prejudices called antihaitianismo. Antihaitianismo is actually the present manifestation of the long-term evolution of racial prejudice, the selective interpretation of historical facts, and the creation of a nationalist Dominican false consciousness. That process, of course, did not take place spontaneously. It was orchestrated by powerful elite groups in the Dominican Republic with strong interests to defend. The Origins of Antihaitianismo The early origin of what later came to be known as antihaitianismo is to be found in the racial prejudices of the Spanish inhabitants of the colony of Santo Domingo (Tolentino Dipp 1973, 1992). Spanish colonization in the 16th century brought sugar, slavery, and racial prejudice to the island. A white Spanish elite controlled the colony's administration and ruled over a mixed population of creoles and slaves. On the other hand, the dominance of cattle ranching as the colony's main economic activity lessened racial tensions and even promoted miscegenation. That does not mean that slaves were treated as equals. Slavery existed, slaves were mistreated, and slave rebellions were severely punished. Furthermore, the color of one's skin indicated to a large degree one's social standing and economic position (Tolentino Dipp 1973, 1992).

"In presenting the 'Living in America' series, the museum works in collaboration with a wide variety of cultural and community-based organizations in New York City," said Myles Gordon, vice president of education at the museum. "The museum designed this series to reflect our experiences as a world and a nation of many cultures, examining how our differences are a fundamental strength that we share, as well as an ongoing challenge." Each year the museum's "Living in America" series showcases a different culture and community. "The Haitian Experience" celebrates the rich and diverse arts and culture of the more than 500,000 Haitians living in the three states surrounding New York City New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, Gordon said. The series offers a wide range of programs, from performances and films to lectures and panel discussions. One cold January day was warmed with Caribbean heat by the compelling drum rhythms of master drummer Frisner Augustine and the aroma of classic Haitian dishes drawing visitors to the wing of the museum where some of the artists who are participating in the month-long event were giving a preview of their presentations for journalists January 7.
