It was at the first real World Championships in Budapest in 1934, which were the very first ones for women as well, when it came into favor as a competition apparatus and two years later, when it had its Olympic debut in Berlin. Already in 1830 the Frenchman Amoros wrote of uneven and asymmetrically adjusted bars in a very successful textbook (Manuel deducation physique et morale), which was still published in 1859 in its ninth edition. This modification of the bars was not really established in the following time, not at all as a specific feminine apparatus, since the equal participation of women was not possible for a long time due to social circumstances. There were women doing gymnastics around the turn of the century in the German Gymnastics League, but the real upturn started after World War II only.

About a thousand years later, the Chinese developed a version of gymnastics they called Cong Fu. In the second century BC, men and women of Minoan Crete developed the art of bull leaping. In bull leaping the performer would run toward a charging bull, grab its horns, and, upon being tossed into the air, execute various midair stunts before landing on the bull's back, then dismount with a flip. In the times of the ancient Romans and Greeks, gymnastics has been used to facilitate body development through exercise. The word "Gymnastics" derives from the Greek word "gymnazein" which translated means "exercise naked". In ancient Greece, three distinct programs of gymnastic exercise were developed: one for the maintenance of good physical condition, another for military training, and a third as part of a conditioning regimen for athletes. The early Greek teachers of physical fitness were the first to design systems of physical activity for both athletes and for the general citizenry. Such programs, which included gymnastics, were considered central to the formal education of children. The Greeks believed that the unity of mind and body could only be realized through participation in physical exercises. Gymnastics was included in early Olympic games around this time.

Rhythmic gymnastics is still primarily a European sport but has spread across the world. Rhythmic gymnastics can be seen as divided in two sections: a) Rhythmics , which consists of group exercises with natural and harmonic movements, carried out to music. It develops coordination, flexibility, strength and balance through movements that are reciprocal, alternating contraction and relaxation. It emphasizes fluidity and connections between moves, so that in lifting the arm the movement travels from the centre of the body all the way out to the fingertips. Apparatus, e.g. balls, hoops, ribbons, are used to develop coordination. It is from this branch that the Aesthetic Group Gymnastics ("AGG") is developed.
