   Extractions: The indigenous population comprises a number of ethnic groups: Arawak (Lokono), Warao, Karinya (Carib), Kapon (Akawaio), Kapon (Patamona), and Pemon (Arekuna), all occupying the North-west and the coastal region between the Demerara and Corentyne rivers. The South is occupied by Carib-speaking Makusi, Wapisiana, and WaiWai. The economy of all the groups is based primarily on manioc horticulture, supplemented by hunting and fishing. Manioc-based subsistence has guaranteed the survival of key traditional arts and industries, notably architecture, ceramics, basketry, featherwork, beadwork and weaving. The raw materials employed in the manufacture of all artifacts originally came mainly from the forests. Many materials were seasonal, for example the seeds of the crab-nut tree, used for body paint. Particular inorganic raw materials, such as pottery clay, tempering materials used in pottery manufacture such as sand, decomposed granite, mica, etc., or a particular kind of stone suitable for the manufacture of grater chips, may be rare or unobtainable in a given area, and this placed specific values on the associated products. Trade, based on the barter of such artifacts as Karinya pottery, Wapisiana cotton hammocks or Warao canoes and fibre hammocks, survived into the middle of the 20th century. Two ceramic traditions both originating from the north-west, have characterized the indigenous groups, other styles of pottery in the south being of only local importance.

The colony was created by Dutch and British planters who grew sugarcane using the labor of slaves and indentured workers. Ignoring the country's vast interior, the planters constructed dikes and dams that transformed the coast into an arable plain. With the exception of the indigenous Amerindians and a few Europeans, the entire population consisted of imported plantation workers or their descendants. Guyanese culture developed with the adaptation of the forced and voluntary immigrants to the customs of the dominant British. Brought to Guyana as slaves, Africans of diverse backgrounds had been thrown together under conditions that severely constrained their ability to preserve their respective cultural traditions. In adopting Christianity and the values of British colonists, the descendants of the African slaves laid the foundations of today's Afro-Guyanese culture. Arriving later and under somewhat more favorable circumstances, East Indian immigrants were subjected to fewer pressures to assimilate than the Africans had been. As a result, more of their traditional culture was preserved. Although the culture of independent Guyana has become more truly national, the Guyanese people remain divided by ethnic mistrust. The Guyanese elite that has emerged to replace the colonial administration faces the enormous challenge of satisfying the aspirations of the people concerning economic development and educational opportunity.

Denis Williams has gained fame as a painter, novelist, curator, and anthropologist. Philip Moore is well known for his wood sculptures, which show African influence. Art takes many forms in Guyana, but its dominant themes are the Amerindians, the ethnic diversity of the population and the physical beauties of Guyana. The works of Stanley Greaves, Ronald Savory, Philip Moore and the late Aubrey Williams have been much in demand in the last two decades. Savory's works in particular have brought the hard-to-reach interior within view of urban dwellers.
