Extractions: Lucy Duran introduced this two-part feature from Guinea-Bissau. A small forgotten and isolated country in West Africa, it has only recently emerged from years of instability - until now its music, combining local traditions with a unique creole culture, has rarely been heard outside the country. The 2nd programme follows last year's Late Junction label on-location recording of one of Africa's rising stars, Manecas Costa. Lucy tells the story of the making of the CD, and visits Cacheu, the home of Guinea-Bissau's traditional gumbe rhythm.

Guinea-Bissau is mainly low-lying and swampy. A mostly low coastal plain gradually rises to a plateau region in the east. The highest point of the country (310 m) is situated in the south-east. Numerous meandering rivers cross the country from east to west and form wide estuaries near their mouths. Nearly all are navigable and serve as major transportation arteries. Climate The climate is tropical, generally hot and humid. The annual average temperature is around 25°C. The rainy season is from June to November. Annual precipitation is 2100 mm in Bolama on an average. The difference between high tide and low tide is quite remarkable on the Guinean coast. Therefore, when the rivers are in flood during the rainy season and the tide is coming in, up to one third of the country's surface may disappear under water.

Extractions: Guinea-Bissau BACKGROUND lingua franca spoken by at least 80 percent of the populationis Kriolo, a creole language based on Portuguese and the various African languages of Guinea-Bissau. Guinea-Bissau is one of the poorest countries in Africa. The minimum wage is about $14 per month; female and male literacy rates are 15.7 percent and 20.5 respectively; and life expectancy is only 47 years. At independence, the victorious liberation movement of Guinea-Bissau, PAIGC, the (African Party for the Independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde) introduced a political and economic order based on Marxist-Leninist principles. Procedures and results were not unlike those reported for Angola and Mozambique, where similar highly-centralized systems replaced the equally centralized and authoritarian Portuguese colonial order. Attempts to implement a socialized economy resulted in an inflated and inefficient state apparatus, reduction in productivity and increasing dependence on foreign aid, which now finances over 90 percent of the national budget. The determination to build a one-party state resulted in a massive onslaught of violations of fundamental human rights and the perpetuation of a political culture based on mutual fearthe government of its rivals, the people of the security forces. After formal independence in 1974 (the PAIGC had unilaterally declared Guinea-Bissau independent in 1973), the security forces of Luis Cabral's government executed about a hundred individuals suspected of collaboration with the Portuguese regime. After a failed coup attempt in 1978, even more met a similar fate and were buried in mass graves in the Oio region. In 1980, a successful
