Extractions: UMUC on GUAM Living on Guam Before discussing UMUC on Guam, let's consider the "on Guam" aspect first. Guam is the largest and southernmost of the Marianas Islands in the western Pacific. Its location at about 12 degrees north latitude and 144 degrees east longitude puts it about three hours by air south of Tokyo and three hours by air north of Sydney. Though big by Micronesian standards, Guam measures just thirty miles long and twelve miles wide at its widest point. Like the rest of this part of the tropics, there are just two seasons: rainy and dry. The temperature rarely deviates from its 85 degree daytime average (mid seventies at night), though the humidity, with swings to near 90%, can at times make the day seem less "tropical" and more "stifling." Most island development remains concentrated in the northern half of the island. The island's capital, Hagatna, is on the central western side of the island, as is its main tourist district of Tumon Bay and its many five star resorts. Southern Guam remains a collection of seaside villages nestled below the island's southern mountains. Guam is an unincorporated U.S. territory headed by an elected governor. The island has a non-voting delegate in Washington and a local legislative body consisting of fifteen elected members. The court system is similar to most any jurisdiction in the mainland.

Extractions: WELCOME TO HOMESCHOOL NATION! History Support Groups Events I'm excited to be part of the Old Schoolhouse Magazine's State Coordinator Team. My name is Colleen Smith and my husband, Les, and I have been homeschooling our children for 10 years. We started homeschooling when living in B.C. Canada when our eldest son was entering 2nd grade. Over the years we have changed our homeschooling style, using various packaged curriculum to computer based learning, unit studies, workbooks, and finally settling on unschooling as our preferred method. Guam is a beautiful tropical island, part of the Northern Mariana Islands, and is a U.S. Territory. Public schools on Guam are overcrowded and underfunded. Private education is often too costly for families on limited incomes. Homeschooling is fast becoming a popular alternative for Guam families. I'm looking forward to keeping the Old Schoolhouse Magazine updated on Guam's homeschooling events. Homeschooling on Guam - A Brief History Homeschooling became popular on Guam sometime in the late 1980's. Pioneers of those days are still around offering advice to homeschoolers on our tropical island. Currently, Guam's homeschooling law is referred to as an "equivalency status", requiring the homeschooled child to be taught in the same subject areas as are taught in the public schools. No notification to any government agency is required. This makes homeschooling in our tropical paradise very easy.

Partido SAIPAN, CNMI (Marianas Variety, April 12) The Guam delegation that lobbied in Washington, D.C. for more military deployments on island is back with the good news that this U.S. territory will most likely emerge as a winner in the current realignment of forces that the Pentagon is undertaking. "There were no specifics given but the sense that all of us got was that there will be a larger military footprint on Guam," said Gerald Perez, administrator of the Guam Economic Development and Commerce Authority. Perez, along with Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo and Guam Chamber of Commerce officials Lee Webber, Jim Atkins and Carl Peterson, just came back from Washington where they attended meetings on the militarys planned repositioning of forces. While there, the members of the Guam delegation also lobbied Washington officials to have more military assets deployed to Guam, including an aircraft carrier group that Hawaii is also competing for.

Last year's Quadrennial Defense Review also raised the issue of limited access to Asia. It found the alignment of US assets concentrated in Western Europe and Northeast Asia "inadequate for the new strategic environment". It directed Air Force Secretary James Roche to "increase contingency basing in the Pacific and Indian oceans, as well as in the Arabian Gulf". Studies on how the Defense Department should accomplish this are ongoing.
