January 31, 2000 But from an archaeological point of view, if you knock down the modern conveniencestore called groundhog day, you find some Really I am quite able to teach. http://www.starchamber.com/paracelsus/january312000.shtml
Extractions: G roundhog Day is my favorite day of the year. Regardless of what the rodent predicts, we're halfway through winter. T.S. Eliot said that April is the cruellest month, and that makes perfect sense to me. The tragic puzzle of ripeness is that it is followed so quickly by rot. To me, the saddest day of the year is Memorial Day, because thereafter you are using up the summer days at the inexorable rate of one every 24 hours, and to the extent that you don't fill each one with laughing happiness and carefree leafgreen remembrance, you are squandering wealth. In short, the goody clock is running. Barren February, by contrast, presents challenge instead of wealth. If you happen upon goody, it's like stumbling across an oasis in the desert, oil on the North Slope. Three cheers! Look at you! So here is homely Groundhog Day squatting in the middle of the winter. It is too silly to be taken seriously even by the marketing wizards at Hallmark. It persists only because it mocks itself so affably. But from an archaeological point of view, if you knock down the modern convenience store called Groundhog Day, you find some solid foundations. The season is turning. The light is returning. The quickening is underway and the long march toward ripeness has begun. There's goody enough in that. I love the summer, but I trust the winter.
What Does The Bible Teach About Celebrating? - OneCommunity Author, Topic What does the Bible teach about celebrating? You are freeto celebrate Easter, birthday or groundhog day or none of the above. http://bbs.crystalcathedral.org/ubb/Forum5/HTML/000072.html
Extractions: What do you think the Bible teaches on this? Here's a few verses to consider... 67 times in the Bible God commands or urges us to "celebrate": "[Passover] is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the LORD - a lasting ordinance" (Exodus 12:14, NIV). "One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts... They will celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness"(Psalm 145:4,7, NIV).

Please send submissions to: I used Jennifer Paulson's idea from Quilts in the Classroom ( QNM issue 316). A friend helped me hand dye the fabric, and the kids designed their own fish. We used a fusible grid foundation to make it easy for the kids to sew their own blocks. I pieced the blocks together and added a black border to make the quilt look like a fish tank. Everyone had fun making the quilt, and we had a successful auction.
The State Of The Church Address I tell you this story on this groundhog day, because the UU joke, especially sinceits Ground Hog day. Sunday school class was trying to teach the children http://stocktonuu.inreach.com/joy_sermons/state_of_church_2feb03.htm
Extractions: I tell you this story on this Today, at this midpoint in the interim year, I want speak about the state of the church as I see it. On my second Sunday in this pulpit, I unpacked a suitcase of the items symbolic of the tasks of an interim minister. One of those items was a mirror. Today I hold it up to you. Perhaps a better metaphor to use would be a photo showing where you are now. So I offer a snapshot today, taken of course through my own lens. I already mentioned the recent fast changes in ministerial leadership. The changes in leadership in religious education have also been quick since Melinda's long service. There have been three religious education directors, Doreen, Darcy and Dawn, and between them, members of the congregation have served as acting DRE's for months at a time. It is not unusual in Unitarian Universalist congregations to have high turnover in religious educators, though it can be as unsettling as rapid changes in ministers. But things are settling down on the RE front, under the leadership of Kimba Livesay, your new Director of Religious Education. Light of ages and some nations,/ All traditions save our own

Extractions: Jan. 24 - January 25 is Burns Night in Scotland. The "Burns Supper" is eaten all across Scotland each year on the anniversary of the national poet's birth. It consists of haggis and whiskey. It is customary for the host to read Burns's Ode to a Haggis at the dinner table, presumably as a diversionary tactic. The haggis are a gentle breed of playful mammals indigenous to the Scottish highlands. They have never survived attempts at transplantation. They have been popular cuisine for as long as the British isles have been populated. Julius Caesar reflects in his memoirs that he tried to bring several thousand haggis back to Rome for breeding after his conquest of Brittaniaa controversial decision that eventually led to civil war in the Roman Empire. The ancient Picts of Ireland invaded and eventually settled Scotland in no small part because of their affinity for haggis. The ancient Celts migrated in the opposite direction to avoid it. Haggis were traditionally trapped, killed, and prepared like most other small mammals. Toward the end of the eighteenth century, however, it became fashionable to drop living haggis, like lobster, into pots of boiling water. This is because after boiling for half an hour the pelt peels off easily and can then be dried and used for in textiles. Haggis fur is especially popular in Scottish gloves, coats, and seat covers.

Extractions: YouthBuild and The Home Depot Team Up for National Groundhog Job Shadow Day Groundhog Day is coming early this year for hundreds of at-risk youth across the country who are shadowing workplace mentors at The Home Depot. Instead of predicting the advent of spring, however, National Groundhog Job Shadow Day (January 31) will bring YouthBuild students one step closer to successful futures. From demonstrating painting techniques and cutting lumber for a new porch to explaining the finer points of ceramic tile installation and picking out carpeting for a new home, the students will learn from the do-it-yourself experts how they can use their construction expertise upon graduation to achieve their goals and help others build their dreams. "Job shadowing at The Home Depot exposes our students to the real business world,” said YouthBuild Program Director Greg Flores. “At the same time, employers at The Home Depot get the opportunity to evaluate our students' interests, performance and abilities. This partnership becomes a stepping stone for our students to prepare for the working world and look at a possible future at The Home Depot." Groundhog Job Shadow Day complements the skills taught in YouthBuild, which provides education to help low-income youth (most of whom did not complete high school) secure their GED or high school diploma while learning construction skills by building affordable housing for low-income and homeless families. Weekly classes build sound work habits and decision-making skills and teach students how to manage time effectively, develop career plans and handle job interviews. Students in more than 200 programs across the country have built affordable, new homes for more than 10,000 families.
