    Extractions: Iceland is one of the largest islands in the North Atlantic, lies between latitude 63°24´N and 66°33´N and between longitude 13°30´W and 24°32´W. Iceland has a total area of 103.000 sq km, or 39.756 sq. miles. From north to south the greatest distance is about 300 km or 185 miles, from west to east about 500 km or 305 miles. The coastline is 6000 km or 3700 miles and the shortest distance to other countries are 286 km or 180 miles to Greenland, 795 km or 495 miles to Scotland and 950 km or 590 miles to Norway. Iceland straddles a submarine ridge connecting Scotland with Greenland and has one of the Earth's major geological faults - the mid-Atlantic rift - running through it. Iceland is one of the most active volcanic countries in the world, and nearly all types of volcanoes formed on earth can be found in Iceland. Geologically Iceland is a very young country still in the progress of its formation. The appearance of the island of Surtsey , created by submarine eruption of the south coast 1963, is one example. Ten years later, in 1973, the island of Heimaey in the Westman Islands had a volcanic eruption. The entire population of some 5,200 were moved to the mainland in a matter of hours, luckily without any accidents occuring.

    Extractions: by John A. Tilley In 1940, most Americans who knew that Greenland existed thought of it as a nondescript white blob near the tops of their world maps. That the place might have any military significance to the great powers had occurred to scarcely anyone - least of all to the people who lived there. But in the next five years Greenland was to become a small but significant theater of war, and was to confront the U.S. Coast Guard with some of the most arduous duties it had ever been called upon to perform. Greenland is a largely deserted island of about 827,000 square miles, most of which lies above the Arctic Circle. Scientists believe that the interior is covered by mountains and steep gorges, but since prehistoric times they have been buried under a mass of ice that covers 80 percent of the land area. (If the Greenland ice cap ever melted, the world's oceans would rise by about 20 feet.) In the winter, the arctic winds blow unimpeded for hundreds of miles over the ice cap, covering it with snow and driving the temperature as low as 90 degrees below zero. The coastline is penetrated by hundreds of narrow fjords, some of them jutting 90 miles inland. For most of the year Greenland is virtually surrounded by a 20- to 30-mile-wide belt that the Eskimos call the storis, a mass of floating icebergs ranging from a few yards to several city blocks wide. During the winter Greenland is almost isolated from the rest of the world; only ships equipped for breaking ice can force their way into the fjords. Few have reason to try.

Roger Braithwaite I worked for many years on Greenland problems, mainly dealing with the Greenland ice sheet, but I am now increasingly interested by problems of global glaciology. Perhaps I should say "re-interested" as I helped to prepare Fluctuations of Glaciers Volume III (1977) and I edited the proceedings of the Riederalp workshop on World Glacier Inventory (1980). After arriving at the University of Manchester in 1994, I finished off several papers on Greenland glaciology: 1) A study on the effect of aerodynamic stability on turbulent heat exchange over the Greenland ice sheet [publication] . This now needs re-visiting as it has at least one major flaw but I will only share that with the readers of a future journal article. 2) An analysis of the degree-day relationship in terms surface energy balance [publication] . I am quite proud of this paper but it incorrectly predicts that degree-day factors should depend upon altitude. Japanese and Nepalese scientists, working in the Himalaya, are now finding degree day factors in reasonable agreement with those from lower altitudes.

QEC covers a broad range of inter-related topics concerned with Quaternary Environmental Change, but with particular interests in the following five themes: sea-level change (see Sea-Level Research Unit ) and coastal evolution on active and passive coastal margins; climate history from marine records; fluvial records from the last and previous interglacials; vegetation history and human/environment relationships and sediment dating.     Extractions: Geography, Culture, and History Greenland is the largest island in the world, measuring 2,670 km from its northern to southern tips, but it has a human population of only about 50,000. All of Greenland has an Arctic climate (mean temperatures below +10 E C for the warmest month). Eighty-five percent of its 2,175,600 sq km area is covered with a massive ice cap that reaches 3,200 m near the center and is over 1,370 m thick in places. Only the Antarctic ice sheet is larger. It holds 9% of the world's fresh water and if all the ice were to melt, the world's oceans reportedly would rise six to seven meters. Annual snows accumulate on the cap and due to weight, the ice flows out toward the edges. From the central mass, ribbons of ice descend along mountain valleys and ravines, pushing hills or large rocks and gravel before them. At other times, the glacier may crown or appear to hang atop high cliff faces. The glacier directly joins the sea in some locations and may move at rates up to 25-30 m each day, berthing icebergs the size of city blocks. The native people of Greenland are believed to be descendants of aboriginal hunters and the "Thule Culture" which probably came to Greenland about the same time as the Norsemen who later vanished. The native peoples (Eskimo culture) of the Arctic are known more traditionally as Inuit"the People." The term "Greenlander" is usually given to all native people of Greenland. The native people of northwestern Greenland, who distinguish themselves from other West Greenlanders, are given their own name by themselvesInuhuit meaning "great and beautiful human beings." Northwest Greenland is known as the Thule District or Avanersuaq.
